The light of dawn entered the camp, the first rays hitting the earth and illuminating the entire clearing. Too early for Mallowfeather to be out and about, she sat in her den, staring out over the clearing trough squinted eyes. "Ugh. Mornings. Why?" She asked of thin air, glaring around at the still-deserted clearing. She had been sorting her herbs all night; well what was left of them.
The last few trips out into the territory had been less than satisfactory of coming across any herbs at all. Everything was dead now. In fact, half the time she was out there, nothing moved; Nothing stirred. No rabbits hopping about in the tall wilted grass. Nothing at all. It seemed at though the Windclan clearing was an island in the center of a sea of golden deadness.
She stood up onto her pure-white paws, as she turned back, into her den, towards her nest that she had pushed all the way back into the deep shadows a few days previous. She loved her privacy, stretched out every night because she knew she could. She had no one to share this place with her. It was her alone space; and work seemed to be swirling around it like a tornado. It was so peaceful in this den that she almost regretted each time life called her out of it

The young apprentice hesitated at the enterence than padded in. Mallowfeahter? Hello? He called into her den as he moved further inside. His gray-black fur stuck out all uneven and messy like he'd slept on it in odd positions for a moon strait without grooming. Really it was very clean, it just always looked scraggly. His large yellow eyes were round orbs in the darkness of the den. Are you in here? I smell you He wanted to smack himself over the head for that one. Of course you smell her mouse-brain! He thought irritably. It is her den afterall! But she smelles like wild herbs mixed with honey. He had always loved that smell.

She opened her eyes all the way. How had she missed someone crossing the clearing towards her den? Was she really that tired? "Yes... Yes Hello" She muttered, snorting at his comment "Smell me? And what exactly do i SMELL Like?" she giggled in an almost kit-like manner. "Please, Please come in" she said shortly, not sparing him another glance as she sat down on her moss nest that was far too big for her small form. "What is the matter?" Why do i even care! Its too early for this kind of nonsense! Maybe i should just send him away?

Cougarpaw blushed, "Well, you smell like...er.. Flowers and ... er...Honey.." He swallowed hard and continued moving closer to where she was sitting. "I hurt my paw training yesterday, and I wanted to make sure it was ok. It hurts when i press down on it He winced as he tried to put weight on his back left paw in demonstration. He was still embarrassed from admitting that she smelled good. "It's making me have a hard time sleeping, so i figured I'd ask if something is wrong with it... but I didnt mean to wake you up! I thought most cats got up by sunrise... ouch He paced a bit as he babbled, which was common when he was nervous. In the act of trying to settle himself he had smacked his face into a twig that was dangling from the ceiling.

She nodded, trying to keep her composure from his slightly idiotic comments. "Yes, Yes thats usually what happens when im sleeping with things that smell just like that, huh?" She giggled "You probably just ;anded on it wrong. You look awful jumpy. Maybe i should get a nice supply of Dandelion to calm you down?" She said it so seriously that he would probably think she was really going to do it. "Just.. stand still while i put on the Marigold... Your bleeding a little anyways..." she muttered, gesturing to a small red dot on the ground that she had just noticed "Dont move."

"Sorry!" He tried to sit still, but was never really good at that either. "Did you eat yet? After this i can get you something from the pile? or hunt you something fresh... if ya want." He babbled some more. He watched as she tended to his small cut. I know i landed wrong, thats what i thought it was he thought to himself.

She finished applying the herbs quickly, pressing her nose to the top of his paw with a slight purr "No, No i don't usually eat till later in the day. I am not much of a morning eater anyways" she laid back down "Your welcome to stay here... i need help sorting the berries." she gestured to a pile on her left

"Sure! he mewed almost too quickly. then he moved over to look at the herbs. What do i do? he asked. He liked her company, and he was happy she gave hima a reason to stay in there. His mentor was off on dawn patrol and would sleep for a bit in the afternoon so he had nothing better to do anyways. He fixed his yellow eyes on the pretty young medicine cat. "Can I ask you something?"

She did not respond to his first question, but stared blankly at her paws. As he finished his second question she purred her reply "Yes! Anything. I need to wake up before i start sorting anyways." what mousebrained thing will he have to say now! As if i need to be bothered by this.. well, whatever THIS was. Probably something like "What Berries are these?". It was so obvious. Juniper...

Do you ever get lonely in here all by yourself?" He looked thoughtfully at her. He knew he'd be terribly lonely without his den mates to curl up with at night. He could never understand how anyone would want to be medicine cat. And she was so pretty too, and a shecat, didnt she want kits? He waited for a response.

"Yes. Sometimes it does indeed get quite lonely. THe nights are extremely cold when i am stuck in here alone. There is a horrible cross-breeze that comes into the clearing right into the den; But luckily i get extra moss." She chuckled, as she looked up into his eyes "Why do you ask such questions?" she asked, an overly curious expression on her face

"I errr, I dont know, I was just curious... So with these berries what do I do?" He changed the subject. So what if he thought she was pretty, she was still a medicine cat and he was still an apprentice, so it didnt matter what stupid thoughts were swimming in his little mind. He focused on the berries and played with one of them with his one claw

She stared at him, an almost cold glare on her face "You should tell me, or i might just let you leave..." she smirked, as if she knew he really wanted to stay here though the conversation had gone awkward. She sort of comprehended his feelings a bit. She of course knew nothing of this sort could happen. But how much did he know? Was she really to be THAT devious? get his hopes up and let him crash down like that?

Manxwillow narrowed her eyes as she pushed her way into the medicine cats den. She hated tight spaces and other cats. She saw an apprentice looking moon eyed at the Medicine cat. Oh yeah thats smart She scorned in her head You go for the med cat, and I'll go have a party with a shadowclan tom She kept her focus on Mallowfeather as she padded in further. "I need something for my head, it hurts and its ruining my day" She almost growled it irritably. She despised the clan ways. If she had been raised by her mother she would know how to take care of herself instead of relying on some shut in who did nothing but play with leaves and listen to cats problems all day. Cougarpaw opened his mouth to answer but when he saw Manxwillow his eyes grew wide. The shecat was known to be vicious and he was all to aware of her hatred for tomcats. He was still small so usually she didnt get too nasty with him, but just the same he kept his distance, as did everyone else. It was like having an enemy living in your den with you.

She glared at Manxwillow "You may be older than me but im the only one who can have attitude in my den and thats final. So either you flatten out your tone or i will flatten it FOR you" her voice was low, in a growl, eyes slits, teeth bared. She was still in sleep mode, and she wasnt about to have some stuck-up she come in here and try to ruin her slow wake-up process "I will tend to your head in a moment. Right now i am finishing up on this one.." she gestured to Cougarpaw, who was at her side "Now, that will give you plenty of time to re-enter my den in a more appropriate fashion, yes?"
