Pinefur could hear something rustle near her ear as she shifted in her sleep. The scent of herbs seemed to wake her, and she tried to fall asleep once more, but couldn't. Sighing, she cracked her eyelids open and was surprised at what she found. Dim light. Where was the sunshine? Where was the birds singing? Then she remembered. Her heart skipped a beat and a delighted purr escaped her throat. So it hadn't been a dream; hunting with Ravenglide. She tried to move her paw to be sure, and to her relief, it was still twisted. So, what Ravenglide said... was true! she thought excitedly.
The brown she-cat glanced around and noticed that she was in the medicine cat den, where Ravenglide had left her. He promised he would visit her that night, and when she stretched her neck to look out of the den's entrance, she saw that the sun was already below the horizen, turning the blue in the sky into rich orange and purple colors. The sight really was breath-taking.
Suddenly, Pinefur picked up voices coming from outside the den. Pricking her ears, she strained to distinguish the low voices. She heard a snort of contempt followed by an irritated sniff, "It's obvious those two are falling for each other. Even a kit can see that much. I just don't understand how that disgusting 'lovey-dovey' stuff works." She identified Kestrelpaw, the feisty tabby apprentice. Then she heard a soft mrrow of laughter, and she identified Thornpaw, the more thoughtful and kind apprentice she often saw around camp. "Well, of course you wouldn't understand - and neither would I, but Ravenglide's been padding after her for moons, so there must be something about her that he likes. Do you want to get some fresh-kill?"
Pinefur thought her heart had stopped. "As if. Go eat by yourself." The sound of paws retreating toward the apprentices' den indicated of Kestrelpaw's leave. Thornpaw also seemed to vanish, for she didn't hear anything else. But she wasn't thinking about where they went. She was thinking about what they said. Ravenglide's been padding after her for moons. "There's... someone else in his life?" she whispered, for once, wanting to disappear into thin air. So when he called her "special", he was just teasing? She knew it was too good to be true.
But she wouldn't let Ravenglide know. If he was looking at someone else, then let him be. She wasn't going to ruin things for him. But what Pinefur didn't understand, was why she was feeling so... hollow inside. She barely knew him, but it felt like she knew him for so much longer than just a day. I never had a chance, anyway, she thought bluntly. Who was she to think that she would ever find someone who cared about her? Maybe she and Ravenglide were never supposed to become anything.

Darkness had fallen over the camp, and Ravenglide had just settled down to eat. After he had left Pinefur and fetched Emberpaw he went to chase down some rabbits and think. When he returned, Pinefur had been resting so he went to eat. From where he had settled near the fresh-kill pile he could feel the looks his clanmates were. He figured they were gossiping about him and Pinefur, but he didn't care.
Munching on the small rabbit he had chosen from the freshkill pile he allowed his mind to wonder. He glanced at the apprentices and wondered when he would get an apprentice of his own, and also wondered when Pinefur would be okay. He was upset that he hadn't got to visit like he said he would, he hated breaking his word when he gave it.

Eaglescreech noticed Ravenglide by the freshkill pile and he snorted. Padding up to the tabby tom, he wondered if he was thinking about Pinefur. Disgusting. Redwhisker was the only exception, but when other cats were being all romantic, it made him irritated. He sat down across from the young warrior and smirked.
"How's it going with you and Pinefur?" he sniffed, snatching a rabbit from the pile and tearing a piece out with his jaws. While he swallowed it, he watched Ravenglide through narrowed eyes. How could he fall for someone so clumsy and quiet like Pinefur? She-cats like those annoyed him, honestly. He didn't even know how he managed to even become friends with Redwhisker.
Eaglescreech remembered when Pinefur limped into camp, leaning on Ravenglide's shoulder. Quite pathetic, really. He wondered how she got her paw so banged up. "Oh, and about her paw, how did she hurt it? Did she trip over her own tail?" he sneered, shaking his head in disapproval. Poor, Ravenglide, he thought in cruel amusement. Must be frustrating to end up with someone like Pinefur.

Ravenglide glanced up sharply has his clanmate, Eaglescreech approached. 'How's if going with you and Pinefur?' the other tom had asked, and then sneered, 'and how did she hurt her paw? did she trip over her own tail?' Ravenglide pelt a growl rise in his throat as Eaglescreech insulted the she-cat he felt so strongly for, but Ravenglide knew snapping at Eaglescreech would do no good.
Glancing around, he looked at Eaglescreech forcing a smirk on his face as he replied, "That she-cat is so gullible, she acutally thinks that I care for her. And as for her paw, she probably tripped over her own tail while she was so busy dazed by me." With an exaggerated snort, he added, "As if I would moon over her."
In his head, he felt instantly guilty. He knew this is how he had to play Eaglescreech, but the tabby tom felt that his blue eyes betrayed his real feelings for the she-cat. He was in love with her, but he knew she wasn't ready to hear it.

Eaglescreech raised a brow in a surprised expression. He had not expected Ravenglide to say something like that. He was about to believe him, until he saw the look in the tabby tom's blue eyes. I knew he was lying, he thought to himself. He snorted and was just about to walk off, when a small shape of brown caught his eye. A grin slowly spread across his face, and an anticipated gleam shone in his eyes. "I don't think Pinefur could say the same about you," he jeered, pointing his tail at something behind Ravenglide.
Pinefur was standing at the entrance to the medicine cat den, eyes clouding with tears. She had decided to go and search for Ravenglide, but she figured that he was never going to visit her. It was too good to be true, after all. He was just using her to impress everyone else. She had always thought that he was such a kind tom, but now she knew she had been wrong. Very wrong.
Pinefur quickly started toward the camp entrance, despite her throbbing paw. It was still painful to put pressure on it, so she was limping akwardly. Oh, how embarrassed she was! She truly wished she could've died to keep herself from being laughed at. In fact, Eaglescreech was already laughing hysterically, his head thrown back and his paws slapping the ground in an attempt to control his laughter. She couldn't hold back her tears any longer, but she had already reached the camp entrance by then.
Eaglescreech's flanks were heaving from laughter, and he let out an amused sigh. "Congratulations; you really did it this time," he mrrowed, nudging Ravenglide's shoulder in approval before padding away from him. Meanwhile, Pinefur was trying to distance her from Ravenglide as much as she could. She was filled with so many emotions; anger, hate, disbelief, and most of all, betrayal. She felt as if her heart broke into pieces, and all hopes of ever being with Ravenglide vanished. She knew all along that he never cared for her. He already had someone else in his life. Why couldn't he have told her sooner?
Or why did he even ask her to hunt with him that morning? Ravenglide put on such a good act, that it really did left Pinefur sobbing in misery. This wasn't one of her usual sensativity break-downs, but this was something much more emotional. She had actually thought they she and Ravenglide would become more than just Clanmates. Pinefur knew it had been a day, but he made her feel so cared for, as if her life had value. No one else was ever able to do something like that. Her paw was even more painful now that she had trekked so deep into WindClan territory, and she didn't realize until a mouse scurried across her path that she was in the woodlands. Memories of hunting there only made her feel worse, and the pain in her twisted paw seemed to be adding to her misery. What a terrible day.

Ravenglide felt his pelt grow hot as he turned to see Pinefur's hurt expression. He opened his mouth to explain, forgetting Eaglescreech's presence. Before the tabby could utter a single word the injured she-cat turned and dashed out of camp, moving suprisingly fast on three legs. Turning his blue eyes back to Eaglescreech at the tom nudged him, he blinked rapidly. What had he done?
Turning on a dime, he yowled, "Pinefur! Wait!" Running as fast as he could he raced after the hurt she-cat blindly following her scent and ignoring the stare of the clanmates around him. Why did she choose that moment to walk up behind him? Worse, why did he lie? Surprised at how far the she-cat had gotten, he realized she was in the woods.
A she-cat injured and alone was a terrible risk for dogs, This thought shot horror through Ravenglide pushing him to run faster. There were some two-leg nests with dogs in it, near the border of the wooded area-dogs that lived there were let out at night. Pushing his way through the brambles ripping through his tabby fur he listened for barking, praying to StarClan that they weren't loose.

Pinefur thought she heard a rustling behind her, and part of her hoped it was Ravenglide, but the noise soon fell silent and she let out a shaky sigh. Part of her wanted him come back and apoligize, to tell her that he didn't mean to and that everything was going to be alright. But why? He made it clear that she was just another Clanmate who he made fun of. How did she ever think toms could be kind and caring?
Suddenly, she thought she could scent Ravenglide in the wind, and her hackles raised. Her ivy-green eyes were dull and clouded, and her cheeks were still damp from tears. "Leave me alone!" she hissed miserably. "Don't act like I don't know! Just.. just go away," she cried, breaking into tears once again. She was about to turn and run away, but an unfamiliar scent greeted her. Frowning in confusion, a loud bark coming from ahead of her confirmed what she guessed it to be.
A snarling black and white dog stalked out of the undergrowth, small eyes narrowed and glaring at her as it advanced. Pinefur's eyes widened in terror and her jaws opened in a shriek. The dog barked again and this time quickened its pace, while Pinefur could only attempt to run away. Her ears were pinned against her skull and her fur bristled as she erupted out of the greenery and into the mooreland, hoping that she would lose the dog in the woodlands.
But she hadn't. The dog followed out of the small strip of forest and was now extremely close to her; she could feel its hot breath on her hanches. All she could think about now was Ravenglide. She knew she couldn't outrun a dog - especially with a twisted paw, and she had zero chances of fighting it. Pinefur was basically on the brink of death, and it was all her fault. It's not like anyone will miss me, she thought for a heartbeat. Ravenglide already confirmed that.

Ravenglide pushed through the undergrowth, and smelled two scents that made his heart freeze. Pinefur... and a dog. He heard the small she-cat shriek ad heard crashing in the undergrowth. Turning and following the noise, he broke out of the undergrowth to see a black and white dog gaining on the injured she-cat.
Racing towards the dog, he hoped over brambles, and dips desperately not wanting to loose site of the she-cat he so loved. Gasping for air, he pushed himself farther than he ever had, as he ran for her. He had to make it in time...
This is all my fault, if i loose her, i'll never forgive myself... and if she escapes she'll still never forgive me. Even with these negitive thoughts filling his mind, he found that he was almost flying across the moor. Coming up over one last slope, he was almost there.

Pinefur desperately tried to quicken her pace, but every time she did, the pain in her paw only grew worse. How would she ever be able to outrun a dog at this rate? With every painful step, the dog advanced on her, its tongue lolling out of its open jaws, revealing sharp white teeth. Even if she managed to stay ahead of the dog, she was soon beginning to tire. Her muscles were screaming with exhaustion and her paw was in agony.
She realized that she had no choice but to attempt to fight it. But as she turned, her paw skidded out from under her and she tumbled to the ground. The dog barked triumphantly and didn't hesitate. It sunk its teeth deep into her shoulder, warm blood beginning to ooze out. Pinefur shrieked in agony as the dog then released her and went for her flank. She felt teeth make contact with her skin once more and this time the brute lifted her from the ground and violently began to shake her. She could feel her wounds stinging intensely, making it excrutiatingly painful to even move.
Pinefur hissed feebly and swiped her claws on the dog's muzzle. It howled and immediately released its grasp on her side. She struggled to rise to her paws - but couldn't. The bite marks in her shoulder were deep and the blood kept coming, along with more severe bite marks on her flank. What did she ever do to deserve this? Maybe it would be better, knowing that Ravenglide wouldn't care if she died.
The dog's muzzle only had a mere cut on it, and it still had the same lust for blood as it did before. Pinefur managed to stand by now, but every effort was painful. She tried frantically to remember her fighting moves, but she was never a good fighter. She darted forwards, but she was a heartbeat too slow and the dog simply smacked a paw into her head, sending her flying. The wind was knocked out of her lungs as she hit the ground with a thud, and her head was throbbing. If only she hadn't ran away like a coward.

Ravenglide bounded over the slope just to see the dog grab Pinefur, as she slashed it she fell to the ground and his hissed in fury as he ran towards her the brutes paw knocked her down. Covering the last few foxlengths, the tabby tom lept on the dog with a yowl. Knocking the dog side ways and away from Pinefur.
The dog turned on him, snapping it's massive mouth around his front paw. With a yowl of pain, Ravenglide slashed at him with his other set of claws and hissed. Pulling away from the dog only felt worse. He could vividly feel the teeth reip out his fur and the tom slashed his claws across the dogs eye. Blood welled from the gashes and fell into the dogs eyes, blinding it. The dog bit down hard on Ravenglide's paw then let go. The dog turned to run clearly beaten by the cats, and Ravenglide gave chase slashing at it's back as it ran.
Falling away from the dog, he landed on the ground pain shooting through his paw, and blood welling from his scratches. He turned back to Pinefur, and opened his mouth to speak, "Pinefur... "

Pinefur was barely conscious; her head was throbbing and the bitemarks on her body were stinging like fury. Every sound was muffled and her vision was blurry. She thought she could make out Ravenglide chasing the dog out of WindClan territory, but she couldn't tell for sure. Every movement, effort, and even every thought was painful. The world was swaying underneath her, and she felt nausious.
Suddenly, the familiar scent of Ravenglide filled the air around her, and she could hear his soft voice near her ear. Her eyes were barely open, and she struggled to form words. Why was he calling out her name? Why was he even there? A faint vision of him flinging himself at the dog flashed through her mind, and she realized that he came back for her. Ravenglide actually came back to save her. But why? He had no feelings for her, so he could've just let her die. But he didn't.
Pinefur's breaths were quick and shallow, and with every heartbeat, her vision began to fade into nothing but blackness. She desperately tried to keep herself conscious, but it was difficult. "Ravenglide... why..." she managed to choke out, swallowing hard. But it was no use. She was already passing out, and she couldn't do anything about it. Her last thoughts were focused on Ravenglide, and she wondered if she would ever see him again.

Ravenglide felt panicked, as he franticlly nosed his fallen clanmate. She was still alive, but wasn't responding. Gently he picked her up by her scruff, and wiggled underneathe her and began to pad slowly back to camp. Every step was agony, the dog had snapped down hard on his paw, but under Pinefur's added wieght there was no way that he could limp.
The walk was treachourusly slow, but he could see the gorse around the camp grow clearer as he grew closer to the camp. She can't die... not without me telling her how I really feel, he thought with despair. He pushed through the gorse slowly, and trudged towards the medicine cat den, ignoring the cries of his clanmates and thier astonished looks.
Pushing through them all, he made just to the outside of the medicine cat den, when he collasped. Pinefur still laying on him, but he just couldn't take another step.
He fell into unconciousness, he was just so exhausted. Flickers of the the dog snapping, and Pinefur shreiking in pain flashed through his mind as he fought feebly against the crashing darkness. The darkness took over and the tabby tom fell into it....

A muffle noise roused Pinefur from unconsciousness. She could hear soft voices speaking to one another, with an anxious tone. The first thought that slowly formed in her mind was of Ravenglide. What was going on? Suddenly, the memories of Ravenglide talking to Eaglescreech, how she escaped from her own embarrassment and ventured out into WindClan territory, and the most frightening of all; being chased and attacked by the dog. She hadn't completely woken from the blackness, but she was awake enough to feel nervous and frightened for her Clanmate.
Ravenglide... is he alright? Oh, this is all my fault... what if he's hurt? Is he even alive? The possibilities were endless, and the more she guessed what could've happened to the tabby tom, the more worried she felt. Finally, she managed to crack her eyelids open. At first, her vision was blurry and trying to look around made her dizzy. But as she blinked her ivy-green eyes a few times, Pinefur was able to see clearly once more. A few cats stood in front of her, one of them she recognized as Embergaze; a respected warrior of WindClan. "You're awake," he noticed, frowning a bit, as if he didn't think she'd wake up at all. By the bright light that shone from the entrance to the medicine cat den, Pinefur figured it was dawn.
"We're glad you're alright. Stay here; I'll get you some breakfast," the muscular tom meowed before turning and padding out of the den. Pinefur hadn't even had a chance to thank him. Maybe it was the experience with Littlestorm that made him so protective over his Clanmates. Then she remembered Ravenglide. Where was he? Anxiety flooded over her as she quickly glanced to her right. No sign of him. As she glanced to her left, she realized that he was slumbering right beside her, in a separate nest. She squinted her eyes in an attempt to see if his flanks were rising; but they weren't.
Pinefur widened her eyes in fear and barely noticed the cobwebs on her shoulder, and on her flank as well. She tried to move, but her muscles were extremely sore and they ached. But even that couldn't stop her from dragging herself closer to Ravenglide until she could bury her nose into his fur. He saved my life. But I risked his. Her heart pace quickened and her eyes clouded with tears. "Please... p-please d-don't be dead, Ravenglide," she pleaded softly, hoping that he would wake up. She shut her eyes tightly as if her nightmare would be over when she opened her eyes. After a brief moment, she opened them, but nothing changed. "Don't leave me! You're... you're the only one I..." she trailed off.
Pinefur decided that she wouldn't let Ravenglide know about her feelings toward him. Why would it matter, anyway, if he didn't feel the same way about her? But she couldn't help herself. He made her feel so cared about, and happy and joyful. Was he about to take all of that away from her? Even if he didn't truly care about her, she cared about him, and losing him would make her life even more miserable and lonely.

Ravenglide awoke with a start. Looking around frantically he realized that he was in the medicine cat den. Where was Pinefur? Sitting up sharply he felt a throbbing pain in his head and in his paw. "Pinefur?" he mewed. WindClan's medicine cat den was large, but it had a fallen limb in the middle which would offer each cat privacy.
Scenting the air, Ravenglide could tell that Pinefur was on the other side of the limb. Standing awkwardly he limped over. Upon seeing her, he breathed a sigh of relief and began speaking immediately. "Pinefur... I was so worried. I'm sorry. I lied to Eaglescreech. I don't think your pathetic or gullible. I think your amazing Pinefur, and I-I love you."
Always a master for words, the tabby tom looked into the she-cat's eyes searching her for a response. She wouldn't hate him... would she? She couldn't hate him... he nearly died for her after all.

Pinefur's ears pricked when she heard Ravenglide speak, and her expression brightened. Lifting her nose from his fur, she looked at him with every feeling she'd ever felt for him in her eyes."Ravenglide, y-you're alive!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with emotion. She had been so worried that he wouldn't wake up, that she would never hear the sound of his voice ever again. But he was alive, and she couldn't have been more relieved or happy.
The brown she-cat barely had any time to relax when words suddenly tumbled out of Ravenglide's mouth. She sat in silence, confused but also hopeful. Ravenglide had lied to Eaglescreech? But why? Why had he made her feel so terrible? She had thought that everything he had told her was a lie from the start; that his intentions were only to make her life worse. But, apparently, she had been wrong.
Her eyes widened even more as he went on, and she was silent when he finished. For some reason, Pinefur couldn't form any words. But she felt so much; her body was practically trembling and she could barely keep herself from passing out again. For a long time, she stared at the ground. There was no doubt; she had heard him correctly. But maybe she was having hallucinations? No, she couldn't, everything still hurt. So why did this feel so unreal?
She could hardly believe a word Ravenglide had said. Pinefur, the she-cat who had always kept to herself and never showed her face to other cats - even her own Clanmates - was now being confronted by a handsome, kind and thoughtful tom who loved her? He really loves me? she thought incredulously, mind reeling. By the time she managed to look up at the brown tabby, she was already crying. But not in misery; instead, they were tears of joy and happiness, shock and relief.
Without a moment of hesitation, Pinefur buried her face into Ravenglide's fur, pressing her head against his chest. "Ravenglide... I-I, I don't know what to say," she breathed, closing her eyes and letting his warm, familiar scent wash over her. He might've loved her, and so did she, but she'd never forget how he saved her life. After a moment, her happiness turned into anxiety. "You c-could've died, though! I risked y-your life, Ravenglide, I'm not good enough for s-someone like you," she stammered. She pulled her head back from his chest and looked up at him. "I'm so happy, I-I really am... I feel the s-same way, but I don't deserve you..." she murmured, looking away.
