Ashcloud let out a breathe of relief that he never knew he was holding, and rose to his paws just as Auburnstripe did the same. "I'm sorry, but your mother is a mouse-brain." he growled suddenly. He was only speaking thr truth, after seeing how she had treated Auburnstripe as an apprentice and even now.
"Listen, you don't have to get critisized by anyone. You're perfect the way you are," he told her honestly. Auburnstripe was perfect to him; wasn't that all that mattered? It was true though, Auburnstripe's mother was very judgemental and cruel.

Auburnstripe let out a loud chuckle as Ashcloud spoke about her mother. It felt good to laugh at what he said again. She had missed this. "I know my whole family is. I've never been good enough for any of them, and really have never wanted to be. My sister just thinks that my parents like her, but she's mistaken. My parents only care for themselves."
she had no emotion in her voice as she spoke. It was true, though. No matter how hard her sister tried for affection from her parents it never worked. Auburnstripe had never wanted to try, she was busy playing with other kits. Looking at Ashcloud she smiled. He really cared for her. This was so new, and she hoped she wouldn't mess it up. "Thanks. Don't ever change." Auburnstripe said softly. He thought she was perfect the way she was? That was definitely something she had never heard before. Imperfections is what she was made up of, and it would take quite some time for her to believe otherwise. It felt so peaceful in the forest with just Ashcloud. After a moment of silence she looked at him and sighed. "Is this what love feels like? Like me not wanting to see you ever be spoken to like that by anyone again?" she questioned. A lop-sided grin spread across Ashcloud's face when Auburnstripe told him never to change. Of course he'd never change for her, and he wanted her to stay the same as well. Even if Auburnstripe had never been born with temper issues, Ashcloud probably would've stayed only as friends with her. At some times though, he wished she could be a little more thoughtful about what she said, but most of the time it didn't bother him.
Ashcloud was only half-surprised at Auburnstripe's question. He knew that she'd never felt the warmth of love that he had recieved from his own family, and that she was new to the feelings she were experiencing. He stood up and padded closer to Auburnstripe, before sitting down once again, but this time with his fur brushing hers. "Well... I don't think anyone knows what true love is. Love.. isn't something you can describe," he explained, turning his face so he could look Auburnstripe in the eye. "It's only something that you feel, and.. I know I'm in love with you, because I feel that way about you."
Auburnstripe wasn't the only one who was confused by these feelings. When Ashcloud had first began to think and feel differently about her, he couldn't make sense of the prickling in his paws when he shared tongues with her, and the warmth in his chest when he looked into her eyes. But now, he knew that he was in love.

He was grinning now? What did she say to make him do that? Well...at least this was a happy looking grin, in fact it looked a little silly. When Ashcloud began to answer her question she just stared and attempted to mentally take notes. She felt like an apprentice again, trying to remember everything her mentor was teaching her. So she wasn't the only one who couldn't completely describe it, that made her feel better.
The warmth of his fur was something she could definitely get used to. Having his fur brushed against her own was the best feeling in the world. Words could not describe how amazing it felt to have someone care for her, finally. "Well if that is what love is, I'm definitely in love with you. That feeling has been trying to take over for a while, but I was afraid you wouldn't feel the same way. At least now I know that the feeling was love."
she purred. Auburnstripe twined her tail with his, a move she knew was a bit daring for herself, but it just felt like the right thing to do. "You were thinking about the time you were scared of that mouse and I laughed at you before, weren't you?" the thought suddenly hit her as she remembered the incident that had led up to their little outbursts.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

A deep, throaty purr rumbled from the bottom of Ashcloud's throat without him realizing, and he gently pressed his nose against Auburnstripe's. He knew that doing so was a bit bold, considering that Auburnstripe was sensitive to touch ever since her family had mistreated her, but he wanted her to know that he would never hurt her, and that he only wanted to make her happy.
When the subject changed to their arguements from earlier, Ashcloud shifted uncomfortably. He didn't like to mention his arguements with Auburnstripe right after one, but when she asked about the time when a mouse had scared him out of his fur, he relaxed a bit and smiled. "Uh, yeah..." he chuckled, laughter shining in his golden eyes. "And, I really was sorry for letting that mouse escape," he added hastily, still feeling a bit discouraged.

Auburnstripe didn't even flinch when Ashcloud's nose touched her own. Normally any form of contact the she-cat would shy away from. She wasn't really one of those that enjoyed being close. But something about Ashcloud made her not care. Though she wouldn't allow any other cat to do so, she was actually fine with Ashcloud being near her. Was this what being a mate with someone was about? So she began to purr, enjoying this moment. She was finally somewhat happy, something she never thought she deserved or would ever know.
Auburnstripe hated bringing up their argument, but then again their argument had led to something much better. So really it was a good argument? "I knew it! That goofy look on your face had said it all."
the she-cat grinned. "I wish we could go back to those days. I was actually somewhat talking to my sister at that point. And my parents weren't complete mousebrains." she meowed somberly. Blinking she shook her head. "It's fine. You had a lot on your mind. I'm sorry I yelled at you." she countered. Auburnstripe sighed deeply and didn't know what to do. What would a normal she-cat do at moment like these to comfort their mate? Obviously she wasn't normal, and had no clue. Channeling her inner apprentice she pawed at his ears with her paw. She grinned, trying to at least cheer him up. She really wasn't good at this mate stuff.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ashcloud smiled sheepishly in embarrassment, and he briefly thought about how the mouse had ran right under him. He chuckled softly, and he returned his focus onto what Auburnstripe said next.
Ashcloud felt warmed by Auburnstripe's apology, and his smile widened. He appreciated the fact that Auburnstripe forgave him for doing something so mouse-brained. He shook the thoughts of their arguement away and wasn't prepared for her sudden attack. He grinned, pawing Auburnstripe's ear in return. His sheathed paw gently battered at it, and he locked eyes with hers.
"Wait... but you're deputy," he suddenly stopped, his eyes widening in apprehension. He hadn't thought of it up until now, and he silently cursed himself in his head. "I mean, being mates with me would only get in your way... you're so busy these days," he fretted, his brows twisted into an anxious frown.
Auburnstripe was always recieving orders from Hawkstar, it was no wonder she had no time for Ashcloud on most days. He wanted to be with her, but how could he, when he would be such a burden on her shoulders? Thinking of this reminded about their arguement in camp, when Ashcloud hadn't wanted to tell Auburnstripe what was bothering him. He shuddered, feeling even more worried.

Good, he was back to smiling, she didn't have to worry about him sulking. He was being playful, and this was the best part. Her whiskers twitched in amusement as he reciprocated the action, pawing her ear this time. The she-cat was lost in his eyes for a few moments. He was just staring at her, and she couldn't help staring back. It was like she could just stare there forever and forget about everything and anyone but him. She snapped out of her little wondering moment when she thought about how to get him back. The pawing of the ears could turn into her pouncing, and the gleam of amusement was deep in her eye.
But he just had to ruin the moment, and Auburnstripe sighed as he mentioned her rank. Maybe she could use a little sarcasm here, it wasn't like she was awful at using it or anything. It seemed to be her specialty. "Really I'm deputy? I would have never guessed that. I thought me ordering around warriors all day was just a normal job for an apprentice."
she grinned. Auburnstripe was pleased with herself, she had come up with a retort that wasn't mean or hurtful, but playful. Rolling her eyes she was tempted to call Ashcloud a mousebrain. "Not being mates with you would be more in the way than anything. We were dancing around with eachother's feelings and that wasn't good for either of us. Now I have a more level head knowing I still have my best friend, and I feel like admitting all of this to you is helping me out. It keeps me grounded." Auburnstripe blurted out. "And I'm not always busy, I just keep myself busy so I won't have to deal with other cats. I've been busy keeping away from you so I wouldn't do something mousebrained. But now I don't want to stay away from you." she quickly added. How to comfort him this time? She could try to do something she saw others do. Would that work? Probably not, they weren't an ordinary couple. So instead she jabbed at his side with her paw, the playful look back on her face.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ashcloud always felt mouse-brained when Auburnstripe used sarcasm on him, but he knew that it was something she couldn't change; and something he didn't want her to change. Instead, he listened quietly as Auburnstripe aruged with him, returning to his amused state. When she finished, he sighed and looked at the ground for a moment. Auburnstripe knew how sensitive he was, so it was difficult for him to not ask questions like that.
"You always know how to win our debates," he grinned, his golden eyes sparkling with amusement and affection. When Auburnstripe jabbed her paw into his side, he gasped, pretending to look as though it hurt. "I'll get you for that!" he growled playfully, his shocked expression turning into a cheerful one.
Bunching his muscles, Ashcloud tackled Auburnstripe, sending them rolling over on each other numerous times. When their movement ceased, Ashcloud had Auburnstripe pinned down, his paws planted on the ground beside her body as he stood over her. His grin widened and he leaned down to touch noses with her. The feeling sent a shiver down his spine, and his paws tingled. It was the best feeling in the world. He laughed softly and locked eyes with her, his gaze softening as a throaty purr rumbled from the depths of his throat.

Auburnstripe just grinned at Ashcloud’s mentioning of her always winning debates. It wasn’t like she had to fight for everything growing up or anything. Debating was her life. ”Well I let you win some every now and then. I don’t like taking charge all the time.”
she mused. The look in his eyes was saying everything and they were showing so much emotion. The she-cat became lost in them for a few moments. She only snapped out of the trance when she heard his playful side begin to show. The unexpected happened and for once Auburnstripe had not anticipated the next move of her ‘opponent’. If anyone had heard that she had been caught off guard, her reputation would be gone. She let a gasp of surprise as she was tackled by Ashcloud. When they rolled around, the gasp was soon turned into a smile on her face. Fun was possible? Who knew. And now here she was pinned down. For once she was allowing herself not to be in control of the situation and she was enjoying it. She was shuddering with excitement. Auburnstripe was loving not having to make decisions, she was going with the flow. Was this normal? Maybe she should let loose more often. Her breathing became harder to control as she stared at him. How could someone make her feel this way? She felt her heart rate accelerating as his nose touched her own. ”Now that you have me here what are you going to do?” she would go along with his little game. It was fun to put him on the spot. Let him make the decisions. She couldn’t stop a purr erupting from her own throat as she watched him. Auburnstripe felt vulnerable, but it felt so good. Ashcloud grinned as he gazed down at Auburnstripe, whiskers twitching in amusement. Though when she didn't retaliate, a somewhat puzzled expression crossed his face. Then he simply frowned in surprise when she asked him what he was going to do next. Since when did she suddenly decide that he could order her around? When he was a kit, he'd only played "Leader" with the other kits in the nursery; including Auburnstripe. He had never played "Deputy".
Up until he became a warrior, he had never realized how important being deputy trully was. The only position that seemed most important was being leader. Now, Ashcloud even thought that sometimes being deputy was even more difficult and stressful than being leader. Although he wasn't deputy, nor was he leader, Ashcloud had a general idea of how Auburnstripe felt.
"So, what, I'm the deputy now?" he raised a brow in a questioning expression and let out a mrrow of laughter shortly afterwards. Ashcloud knew that Auburnstripe didn't show her playful side very often, and when she did, it was only with him. He was grateful that she was even capable of putting up with him. The thought brought a smile to his face.
