Shadeclaw snickered and gave his chest a few licks before looking up at Ashcloud once more. "I see you're taking a liking to that Auburnstripe," he sniffed scornfully, a cruel grin spreading across his face as he took a step forward. "Isn't that right, Ashcloud?" Shadeclaw snorted and trotted around Ashcloud in a circle, like a prowling shark.
Ashcloud felt his pelt warm up, and he started to blush. Faintly at first, then he was completely red in the face. Sure Auburnstripe was his best friend, and he did have feelings for her, but he didn't know what to tell her yet. So he kept silent, and debated wether he should retreat to the warriors' den like usual, or through the camp tunnel. Though before he could make a peremptory decision, Shadeclaw had already began to speak again.
"Well, in my opinion, weak cats shouldn't mate with other weak cats, because that will only give the Clan weak kits to raise and feed. You should just forget about getting lucky with her," he taunted, leaning down and craning his head up si he could get a good look at Ashcloud's face. Well, it certainly was much more red than before - if possible, and his ears were pinned against his skull.
His heart caught in his throat, Ashcloud hunched his head below his shoulders and kept his gaze low to the ground as he stalked away from Shadeclaw, trying to ignore the snickers of satisfaction that came from behind him. His eyes were clouded with stress and emotion as he stumbled toward the gorse tunnel. It was, after all, his closest escape route at the time, anyway. Why does he have to make fun of me for being friends with Auburnstripe? he wondered miserably in his mind. Of course, they had a strong bond, but surely there was nothing after that... right?

"And where do you think you are going?"
came the amused voice of the ThunderClan deputy. The reddish brown she-cat had been organizing patrols once again and now that she had it all in her head she could go along with her day. In fact, she had gone out of her way and thought of the patrols for not only today but tomorrow also. She was so proud of herself. Auburnstripe could just feel the gaze of her sister upon her. They still had yet to get along and probably never would. With them there was far to much water under the bridge to recover what they once had. Her parents, she would never forgive. They didn't care about her, why should she care about them? A grin stretched across the she-cat's face as she thought of what she had planned for her sister today. Her sister had decided to tease her Auburnstripe's entire life, and now it was payback. Auburnstripe had assigned the other she-cat elder duty. Though it was an apprentice task, her sister couldn't say no to the deputy now could she? "You'll never guess what I have my good for nothing sister doing..." she started, but seeing the look on her best friend's face her gaze soon turned to worry. Ashcloud was probably the only cat who would ever see Auburnstripe worry or have any emotions rather than the harsh exterior she usually put on. With Ashcloud, she could be more gentle. He had been there for her, he was like her family. Well...the family she wished she could have had. In a softer voice, finally catching up to the tom, she blocked his way out of camp. "What's wrong?" Auburnstripe asked, her eyes glancing around to see if she could find the source of her best friend's troubles.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ashcloud jumped in surprise when Auburnstripe suddenly appeared from the gorse tunnel, and he knew he'd made a mistake by choosing to go that way. He said nothing for a moment, and kept his eyes low to the ground. Should he tell her? He never did, and he never would. Ashcloud didn't want to burden his best friend with his troubles, especially when she had enough stress on her shoulders being deputy.
"Nothing," he murmured, trying to imagine the look of disappointment on Auburnstripe's face when he wouldn't tell her. He especially didn't want that, and that's why he usually went to the warriors' den so he could calm down and return looking refreshed and happy, concealing his stress under his more cheerful personality.

Auburnstripe watched as her best friend pulled away from her. He wasn't saying anything. She knew he wasn't emotionless. He was the one always by her side when awful stuff happened. He was her support system. And now he wouldn't tell her what was wrong with him? Her fur began to bristle in agitation. "Ashcloud. Look at me when I'm talking you you! There is something wrong, and if you don't tell me I will find out!"
she hissed, eyes glaring at him. She wasn't getting anything but a nothing from him? How dare he be so stubborn! Not only was she disappointed but she felt betrayed. Her claws were sheathing, then unsheathing, her eyes narrowing into slits as she watched him. Lowering her voice and trying to calm down she tried the nice approach. Only he could get her to do this, anyone else she would have clawed in agitation. "Please tell me. I can take care of it, I can help you." Auburnstripe sighed, her fur still on its end.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ashcloud flinched at Auburnstripe's stinging words, and felt the air grow crips with tension. Though he couldn't look her in the eye, he just couldn't. What he needed, was just some time to forgive and forget, like he always did, but with Auburnstripe hissing at him, it wasn't very easy to do so.
When her voice softened, his guilt grew even worse, because he knew that if he were someone else, his ears would've been clawed off by now, and when that happens he knows that Auburnstripe was trying to calm herself down for him. He always knew when she was trying to keep her anger to herself, after all, they've been friends for a long time. "I'm sorry Auburnstripe.. I c-can't..." he mumbled quietly, still not meeting her agrivated gaze.

Still, nothing? Not even going soft on him was working? The claws soon began to flex into the ground again, kneading the dirt with little effort. He was being just like her parents. Secretive, and acting like this. Her fur fluffed out once again, and she hissed again. Auburnstripe shook her head at him. "Can't? Or won't? Because I see nothing physically wrong with you that you can't. But if you don't want to tell me then that is something completely different. I thought I could trust you! You are suppose to be my best friend. Not like them!"
she mewed angrily. "Fine. If you are going to be like that then just go. I don't want to see or talk to you ever again. I'll go find me some other best friend." Of course, Auburnstripe was bluffing. Who would be able to understand her like Ashcloud could? They had so much history together. But if he wanted to act like this, then he could be shoved out of her life, just like her family.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ashcloud couldn't believe his ears. Did Auburnstripe really think that he didn't want to tel her on purpose? Of course he would've liked to consult with her, but he just didn't want drag his stress onto her shoulders. As she went on, her words grew sharper and more hurtful, and Ashcloud was beginning to feel upset like he had earlier, when Shadeclaw had teased him. He was a very sensitive specimen, and only Auburnstripe understood him. But now, she was beating him down like a gang of foxes.
Ashcloud froze in shock. Auburnstripe.. didn't want to ever to talk, or even see him again? His eyes widened and he finally looked up at her, his golden eyes clouded with dismay and guilt. "Auburnstripe.. you don't understand..." he choked out, barely managing to speak in such shock. He had never gotton into such an intense arguement with Auburnstripe like this before, nor did he know how to handle it. Why did he have to be like this? Why couldn't he just consult in her? Ashcloud silently begged StarClan to save their relationship before it's blown out of proportion.

Finally. Some sort of emotion. Seeing his eyes finally really shook the she-cat up. What was that lying behind them? Was that a hint of guilt? Good, he should be guilty. He was not being honest with her, and honesty meant everything to this she-cat. Auburnstripe's life had been full of lies and vindictive threats from parents. The she-cat let a deep breath out, one she didn't know she was holding.
"If I don't understand, then make me understand. I don't like seeing you like this. Can't you get that through your thick skull you mousebrain!"
Auburnstripe fumed. This argument was getting nowhere, she surely wasn't winning this. Why couldn't he just cave and it be over? No, nothing in her life was easy. What made her think she could have something like this last?[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ashcloud couldn't bear to listen to Auburnstripe anymore; her words finally got to him. Anger filling up in his belly, he began to bristle. "You have your own problems; I have mine!" he spat, claws flexing in and out. Ashcloud couldn't believe what he was saying, but he didn't want to be insulted anymore, especially not by his best friend.
"Just leave me alone!" he half-snarled, half-pleaded, before turning and stalking off toward the warriors' den, ignoring the smirk coming from Shadeclaw as he walked past. All the anger suddenly vanished from him, and instead he felt more guilty than ever. He knew he shouldn't had treated Auburnstripe the way he did; he knew how quick she was to anger. But he had done it anyway, and now he felt ashamed.

Now he was getting angry with her? He had no right to do that. He was the one who was keeping secret. He knew what keeping secrets and lying had done to her family. He was a mousebrain. Auburnstripe couldn't believe it. In just a matter of minutes she had lost her best friend. He wanted her to leave him alone, then fine. She could do that. Whatever he wanted was fine with her. This was a mutual agreement. If he wanted to be one of THOSE toms, he could. She would just bury herself into being deputy. Who cares if it drove others insane. They would get over it.
-------------------------Fast Forward a bit-------------------------------
Auburnstripe was still furious with Ashcloud. It had been their worst fight ever. Yes, they had bickering moments before but nothing to this extreme. Usually the argument would be over as soon as it started and they were back to being friends, playing and enjoying themselves. But now...it didn't seem like they could get past this. Itching to get on a hunting patrol she looked around camp for someone to go with her. Auburnstripe hadn't been on a hunting patrol in a long time, and it wouldn't look good to her other clanmates if she wasn't doing the same work they were.
Calling to the clanmate she told them to find one other cat to bring with them. And so the she-cat waited, to see who would be joining her on the patrol.

Opening his eyes when he heard a voice sounding from the entrance to the warriors' den, Ashcloud lifted his head as one of his Clan mates stood before him. A patrol? Going on a patrol would surely take his mind off things, he decided. Climbing out of his nest, he couldn't help but think about the arguement he had had with Auburnstripe the day before.
Emerging from the den, Ashcloud absent-mindedly followed his Clan mate to evidently the cat who was joining them on patrol, and his fur bristled when he realized that that cat was Auburnstripe. Not meeting her angry glare, he said nothing and instead studied each toe on his paws as if they were the most interesting thing he'd seen in his life.

Oh dear sweet StarClan. Was this warrior a mousebrain also? Obviously. Why had the one warrior she had called on patrol with her pick the one cat she would have refused to go with? Auburnstripe decided to keep the angry glare she had been giving Ashcloud the past day and just go along with it. If she switched to another patrol, or asked another cat, that would cause problems. And she didn't need problems. She had enough issues. She could feel the burning gaze of her sister and saw the grin she had on her face. Her sister had set this up!
The silent treatment would continue it seemed. Auburnstripe was fine with that, she could do that. He didn't want to look at her, well she didn't want to see his face either. Beckoning the two cats with her tail she headed off into the forest, her pawsteps a little heavier than normal, full of rage. Worst day of her life.
