Hazelbrook frowned, a suddenly concerned expression crossing her face. She shook her head slightly, as if agreeing with Shadehawk. "Oh, no, certainly not! If you don't feel well you'll definetely need to stay in camp for today, whether you like it or not!" she meowed, twitching her whiskers sympathetically. Her thoughts wandered back to when they had been attacked by the hawk, and shuddered.
Though, in the back of her mind, Hazelbrook felt like Shadehawk's injuries were her fault. She was the one who had met him by the Thunderpath, which led to hunting with him, which then led to the hawk swooping down on them in that sunny clearing. She knew that she shouldn't have been thinking like that, but still, it made her feel guilty.
Though she pushed her negative thoughts out her mind and smiled up at Shadehawk again, her hazel gaze soft with happiness and affection. "In fact, since we both enjoy our company so much, let's go 'bask in the green-leaf sun', as you suggested," she purred in amusement, turning and flicking Shadehawk's chin with her soft tail as she trotted toward a patch of sunlight at the edge of the clearing. Hazelbrook purred loudly, still amazed that the day had turned out to be so wonderful. When she reached her desired "basking" spot, she delicately lay down and sprawled herself on the ground, letting the sunlight seep into her fur as she waited for Shadehawk to join her.

Shadehawks eyes lit up. He loved just laying in the sun. It was his favorite thing to do in all actuality he just wasn't about to admit it. He formed a goofy grin before running over at a quick pace to lay next to her. The sun hit his pelt instantly and he suddenly felt relaxed. His tail moved up and down hitting the sandy clearing in a pattern that made him just want to fall asleep. It was nice. He let out a long relaxed sigh before looking over at Hazelbrook. He rolled onto his back and then back onto his stomach. Why he did that was unknown it was just a weird habit. Perhaps so his back didn't get so hot.
His purring was loud and the entire clan was probably away by now because of the commotion these two had caused. Shadehawk purring? This was a first. He wouldn't do it if he were alone with anyone else. He would be a bitter tom, worse than elders at times. He looked around then stopped for just a moment. Hazelbrook and him were now mates. What did that mean? The tom tilted his head to the side confused by the question he had just asked himself."Hazelbrook..... I have a question to ask you." The tom mewed. He was unsure of how to go about this hopefully he wasn't rushing things.
"Being mates....what does it mean?" He asked. He had never felt like this about someone before. His cheeks turned red from embaressement. "Or better yet, what does the future fortell.... I mean, I've always wanted to be a father....but never found the right she-cat. I care about you a lot Hazelbrook, and I don't want you to be flustered by my question." the black tom mewed. Trailing off back into his own thoughts.

Hazelbrook smiled as Shadehawk lay down beside her, and she rolled over and onto her side so she was facing him. His puzzled expression made her twitch his whiskers in curiosity, and she was about to debate whether or not to ask what was on his mind until he told her that he had a question. Now, her ears perked and she tilted her head to the side, a look that would've been considered by anyone who had seen it.
Hazelbrook somewhat wasn't surprised by his question. She knew that he had trouble expressing his feelings, but she assumed that he knew what being mates was. Then she snorted inwardly, realizing that she, herself, didn't know what being mates with someone was. Though she had her own opinion, which was that two cats who love each other become mates because of it. "Well, I'm not sure... but -" she started, but was interupted by Shadehawk.
At the word, 'father', her eyes widened and her cheeks turned red in embarrassment, her ears growing warm as well. How could she not be flustered by his question? Swallowing, she wondered how she would reply. In truth, she would've liked to let themselves settle down before introducing a topic like this. "I... Shadehawk, that... that's wonderful, but I'd like to think about us - and our future - for a bit longer, before..." she trailed off, looking away in embarrassment. She didn't want to discuss the process of having kits so soon. "I'm sorry," she added softly, leaning forward and rasping her tongue across his ear, an apoligetic look on her face.

Shadehawk wasn't angry with the response that he got. In fact he wasn't really surprised. He had never grown close to a she-cat before. It was new really. He wasn't close to anyone. He understood very much so what this she-cat was thinking and she knew very much so at least after the short conversation what it meant to be a mate. It meant that it was his job to make sure she was safe. That didn't mean to kit sit. That meant if there was a battle that no warrior would hurt Hazelbrook. It also meant that no tom tried to take her away. Shadehawk would not be a happy warrior if Shadeclaw or another tom stepped in and took her. No, he would be devistated.
"No need to apologize Hazelbrook, I just didn't know how those things worked. but from talking to you I have a general idea." He mewed as his dark pelt absorbed the sunlight. She didn't have to apologize. There was no need for that. None at all. He didn't like when she apologized for things that didn't need an apology. He let out a purr as his pelt got warm. This was so nice. Nice indeed he loved it. With a quick lick of his paw he swiped it over his ear. Oh this was nice. Just being with her, here in the sun. It was nice.
"If it's any comfort to you Hazelbrook, I know what my role is as your mate. No warrior will harm you in battle, and no tom especially Shadeclaw will take you away. If our future is bright I will hunt for you every day if you ever incapable. and I'm here to keep you company whenever you need it. Always I promise, and these conversations, I enjoy every moment of them. What would you like to talk about Hazelbrook."

Hazelbrook felt reassured by Shadehawk's intentions, but it still didn't seem that he knew what being a mate meant. Of course, she didn't even know what it truly meant as well, but she simply wanted him to know that he didn't need to stress himself over making sure she never got hurt, or hunting for her when she was sick. "Shadehawk, you don't have to do all those things," she purred, eyes sparkling with appreciation. "I just need to know that you love me, and you'll be there for me," she explained.
That might not have been much, but to Hazelbrook, that was all she wanted in a mate. Sure, they had to be kind to her, and have a warm heart, and always be able to cheer her up, but those were small details. She didn't necessarily need those features - although they'd be nice - when she had someone who she loved. Shadehawk wouldn't have been one of the cats who she'd consider to have as a mate, but after getting to know him better, she realized that it doesn't matter if he wasn't social, or funny, or kind. As long as he cared for her, and she cared for him.
Hazelbrook sighed, and rested her head on Shadehawk's neck, twining her bushy tail with his. "You don't have to change for me," she mewed quietly, her purr vibrating through her body and making her fur tingle with a warm sensation. She loved Shadehawk just the way he was, and she didn't want him to act like someone who he wasn't when he was with her. She liked him quiet, and solitare, and she liked it more when he opened up to her, which made her feel like she could make him believe that he wasn't alone.

Shadehawk raised a brow. He looked at Hazelbrook and nodded. He would do all that for her and he wouldn't change."I can do all those things and more Hazelbrook without changing for you I promise." Shadehawk mewed licking the she-cat between the ears. The dark colored tom looked around. He was still antsy about what happend this morning. Shadeclaw made him nervous and he knew if he wasn't careful, something would happen. That tom was sneaky and he didn't like it. He let out a snort and looked at Hazelbrook with caring eyes. Shadehawk was the tom that had won her over, at least for now. This was good. He took in a large breath and let it out slowly. So far life was good.
He found that his tail had slowly wrapped around her. It was comfortable but sweet at the same time. He knew they were an odd match but that didn't matter any what mattered most was that they had each other. The dark colored tom closed his eyes taking in her scent. Aside from his sore muscles he hadn't been this happy for awhile. It was nice. He wasn't sure what to do with his happiness it was all a new thing. Normally he was incredibly grumpy and bitter.
"Do you know Shadeclaw well Hazelbrook? He's making me nervous. I can't be around you every hour of the day and I don't want him to...I don't want that good for nothing tom to try anything!" Shadehawk mewed.

Hazelbrook felt so safe and reassured with Shadehawk wrapped around her smaller, mroe delicate frame. He made her feel like she had nothing in the world to worry about. But at the mention of Shadeclaw, she froze, and her flanks began to rise and fall more quickly, her breaths suddenly more quick and shallow. She snuggled deeper into Shadehawk's fur and forced herself to relax a bit, but it took an effort to calm herself down.
"... No, I-I don't, well, not r-really..." she admit in a quiet voice, glancing around warily, as if Shadeclaw was watching them at that moment. But as far as she could see, he wasn't, which gave Hazelbrook a bit of confidence. "I'm sorry for making you worry about me," she apoligized, looking up at him with wide eyes. "I don't know why he... he wants to do those things to me." Hazelbrook felt a shiver run down her spine at the reminder of Shadeclaw's words from earlier. They frightened her so much that her claws almost dug into the ground.
With a sigh, she groomed Shadehawk's chest fur for a few moments, the warmth of his soft fur comforting her. She couldn't help but agree with him, though. They'd both have to go on patrols sooner or later, some in which they wouldn't be together, which would've been fine except for the fact that Hazelbrook might be assigned onto one with Shadeclaw. She knew Shadehawk would protect her, but he couldn't do that every heartbeat of his life. Somehow she would have to manage the creepy, black tom cat, but it would be a very difficult thing to do; even despite how gentle and kind Hazelbrook was. Indeed, it would be quite the challenge, but Hazelbrook knew that she wouldn't go through it alone.
