Kestrelpaw hung around near the fresh-kill pile, munching into a small rabbit. The meat was tough and stringy, but since he had his mouth full, he ownly scowled as a complaint; then again, he always had his eyes narrowed. When he finished his well-earned meal, he licked his lips and let his stone-hard gaze travel around camp, looking for something to occupy himself with.
A torbie she-cat caught his eye, and his lips began to draw themselves back in the beginnings of a snarl when he realized that she-cat was Emberpaw, the new medicine cat apprentice of WindClan. Personally, he despised her. How could a blind cat ever become an apprentice? Let alone a medicine cat apprentice? Although it would give Emberpaw one way in serving her Clan, she probably only trained as a medicine cat apprentice because she couldn't be a warrior.
Still, Kestrelpaw thought she was useless. How could she know what injuries someone had if she couldn't see them? No matter how much others had tried to explain it to Kestrelpaw, he had always growled in annoyance and stalked away from them. Today, he felt especially irritated, and just the sight of Emberpaw made him want to sink his claws into something.

Coincidentally, she had accidentally bumped her head on the entrance of the den — she wasn’t quite used to her new den yet — causing her to lose her balance and fall on the herbs. Now she found herself cleaning up after the little mishap and reorganizing the herbs even better than they were before. A breeze wafted through the WindClan camp, and Kestrelpaw’s scent wafted into her nose. Emberpaw quickly finished up and padded over to the older apprentice with a smile. “Hey Kestrelpaw! How are you?” She sniffed out a bird from the fresh-kill pile and began eating it, peeling the feathers away before eating the meat. She looked up at the tom. She’d never know what he’d look like.

Kestrelpaw was still watching Emberpaw when she began to make her way toward him, and he let out a growl of annoyance - loud enough for her to hear. If she couldn't see him glaring at her, he would make sure she'd hear him. He gave his fluffed out chest a few licks before neatly curling his tail around his paws. Did Emberpaw think that she could just walk up to him and shove her nose into his business? "I'm just peachy, actually," he sniffed, tail-tip twitching.
A cruel idea formed in his mind, and a crooked smile spread across his face, and he was even more satisfied that Emberpaw couldn't see it. "You know, I've been thinking lately, about what it's like to be blind," he began slowly, sounding perfectly innocent, "I mean, right now, I can barely tell you apart from that fat, ugly robin you're eating." Kestrelpaw grinned even wider and felt his claws dig into the soft ground in anticipation.
Usually, Kestrelpaw wasn't this cold, but today he was especially raw. He had been waken up early, taken on dawn patrol, a hunting patrol, and a border patrol all in a row, and it had left him exhausted. Not to mention, that afterwards, just as he was heading toward his nest, another cat dragged him into a long conversation that he ended almost immediately. So today wasn't a very good day for Emberpaw to approach him.

Emberpaw flicked her tail in annoyance. If Kestrelpaw didn't want to talk, why didn't he just say so? Probably because he's a narcissist, she thought with a snicker as she took a bite of her robin. Emberpaw loved to have her thoughts. She could say the meanest, nastiest things that she would never say to a cat's face without anyone knowing. It was like her secret indulgence, to be mean. However, she wasn't at all like Kestrelpaw. It wasn't that she didn't have the guts to say it to someone's face; it was just that she regretted it later.
Emberpaw sighed and continued. "Well, it's nice to see that someone hasn't lost their touch of sass these days. It seems like everyone's gone gray lately." |
She was hoping to get a little snicker out of the older apprentice when he spoke again. "You know, I've been thinking lately, about what it's like to be blind. I mean, right now, I can barely tell you apart from that fat, ugly robin you're eating."The tortoiseshell tabby froze, pulsing with rage. She swallowed her bite of robin, but the lump in her throat made it hard to go down. It was normal for her to be teased because of her blindness. It usually left her feeling pissed and that the other person is so immature to know what she goes through. However, to liken her to a dead, grotesque piece of flesh that was being partially digested in her gut right this very moment was just cruel. She couldn't say otherwise because she couldn't see herself. She couldn't internally agree with him because she couldn't see herself. She couldn't stand up for herself because, no matter what she did, she couldn't see herself. This subject was totally off limits. Kestrelpaw had a habit for pushing cats' buttons, but was he really that insensitive? Emberpaw bit her tongue. She wanted to lash out so bad, to pelt him with her claws, to rip his eyes out, to screech at him about what it felt like to be blind. Even to just snarl at him would be enough to satisfy herself. But no. She would not sink to his level. She would not reduce herself to such mockery. Instead she took a deep breath and manage to force her words out of her mouth in something other than a growl. "Was that absolutely necessary, Kestrelpaw?" She padded closer to him as she spoke. She knew for a fact he'd be bigger than her, but she didn't care. She padded forward, and looked straight into his eyes. For some unfathomable reason, she knew where they were. It was as if she could feel them bearing down on her. "Do you really feel the need to pick on someone lower than you, just to make yourself feel better? Do you really need to sink that low?" She couldn't help it anymore. A growl escaped her mouth. "Normally I'd just walk away, but not today, Kestrelpaw. Not today." Emberpaw snarled. She could really be threatening if she wanted to, even if she was smaller than him. Her eyes were narrowed into piercing blue slits. words :: 526 words tagged :: Kestrelpaw notes :: Ember's so pissed rite now ... oh snap x3

By the look of Emberpaw's face, Kestrelpaw knew that he had pulled the correct string. She was fuming, and her entire body was tense, as if she wanted to lash out at him. It was funny to him, since he knew that he could just side-step and she would fall face-flat onto the ground. What a sight that would be. Too bad, Emberpaw wouldn't be able to see it. For a moment, he considered trying this, but she had already begun to speak again.
Why? Why was she not snarling, or crying, or leaving to think about what he'd said? Well, of course it was necessary. How else would he spend his free time? He'd already gone on dawn patrol, and he felt especially moody today. The blind medicine cat apprentice, alone, managed to get on his nerves more than other annoying Clan mates, like Thornpaw. But there was no time to think about how pathetic Thornpaw or Emberpaw was, the tortoiseshell she-cat was still rambling on about making himself feel better and blah, blah, blah.
Honestly, Kestrelpaw couldn't care less about being so "low". It never occured to him that he should even care at all. When Emberpaw took a few threatening steps toward him, he almost burst out laughing. How Emberpaw ever stand a chance against someone as strong and quick, like himself? It would only add to her humiliaty. The tabby apprentice stood taller and narrowed his eyes down at the smaller she-cat, unsheathing his claws.
"Oh, really? Because if I were you, I'd reconsider," he jeered in contempt, lips drawing back in the beginnings of a snarl. Now, Emberpaw was really on his nerves. "Let's go, right here and now. But I don't think you'd do that, now would you? Or maybe you'd just rely on everyone else to come to your rescue? Don't test me, you worthless thing." Kestrelpaw's anger level was rising, and he had more and more insults at the back of his tongue, waiting for her reply so he could hiss them at her. After all, what fun would it be, if he said everything he had in mind, without giving her a chance to reply?

Emberpaw glared at the arrogant tom. He was so ego-centric that it was choking her. Oh, she wish she could see, then she could wipe that stupid smirk off his face. She didn't need to see to know that it was sitting right in front of her.
"Let's go, right here and now. But I don't think you'd do that, now would you? Or maybe you'd just rely on everyone else to come to your rescue? Don't test me, you worthless thing."
Emberpaw began to growl then stopped herself, her sightless eyes widening again. She knew she wouldn't stand a chance in a physical fight, but she coud hold her ground verbally. If he wanted to play that game, so be it. She wouldn't let him get to her, but she would certainly try to get to him. "Oh yeah? Since when did I become a thing?" |
She quirked her eyebrows. Oh, this was going to be fun. She smirked, shrugged her shoulders, and spun on her heels back into the medicine cat's den. She wouldn't let her reputation as a complacent medicine cat be ruined over a brainless tom. When she reached the medicine cat's den, she began counting herbs. Without looking up, she said, "Look, I understand. You can't stand me. Whoopdedoo! You see, the feeling is mutual. However, instead of wasting my time fighting like a kit, I'm going to do something productive and ignore you. You should probably leave me alone and do the same. Anyway, there's no room in my life right now for an ego your size." Emberpaw maintained her focus on the herbs, counting the catmint and the coltsfoot. She definitely needed to stock up on goldenrod now that leaf-fall was upon them. She made a mental note to go out with a warrior later that afternoon to find some. words :: 312 words tagged :: Kestrelpaw notes :: Houston, we have a problem.
