Stormpaw waited for her to start walking, so he could follow. He expected Hornetpaw to start the conversation, since she-cats were usually much better and talking on and on about what happened to them that day. And because of this, most toms thought of it as annoying. But Stormpaw didn't. He enjoyed listening to her, and exchanging his own news with her too.
But this time, Stormpaw felt like he should at least make himself look enthusiastic, (which he was) despite his sickly appearance. Though he had been feeling much better lately, the strange sickness still lingered in his body. But he wouldn't let this get in the way of spending time with Hornetpaw.
"So, did anything worth telling happen while I was sleeping like a hibernating badger?" he joked, an amused grin spreading across his face. Stormpaw shivered, pressing up against Hornetpaw for warmth and comfort. Even though a sunny green-leaf had came, his fever still hadn't left, so it was natural for him to be a bit cold.
But not only did he seek warmth from Hornetpaw, he also wanted to try out some stuff that mates usually did. He and Hornetpaw hadn't decided if it was official yet, but he would often see couples like Badgerstep and Jaggedstripe with their tails twined or sharing tongues together. Stormpaw was new to this kind of stuff, but he knew that Hornetpaw wouldn't mind if he expirimented a bit.

Hornetpaw chuckled quietly, a smile on her face. "No, unless you call alot of rain something worth telling," She meowed, amused. Her eyes shone brightly, and she pressed up against Stormpaw's flank. Her nose twitched, and she looked around, trying to figure out what the smell was.
"It's a rabbit..." The black cat murmured, peering around. She saw a flash of dull brown and dashed towards it, it's white tail bobbing in front of her. She kept running, though she wasn't a very fast cat. Seeing the rabbit dash into a hole, the apprentice stopped, trotting back to Stormpaw.

Stormpaw relaxed as he was gradually warmed by Hornetpaw's body, and he snorted at her response. "Well, then I'm glad you didn't miss out on anything important," he teased, blinking in amusement.
When Hornetpaw suddenly shot off, he jumped in surprise, then let his fur lie flat when he realized that she was after a scrawny rabbit. Rabbits often didn't cross the Thunderpath from WindClan's territory, so it was rare to see one on ShadowClan territory. Unfortunately, it had escaped through a burrow in the ground, and he pouted in disappointment. "Tough luck!" he called, a bout of coughs following shortly after.
Stormpaw was getting red in the face by the time he settled down, and he suddenly felt exhausted. But he ignored it. Trotting forwards, he met Hornetpaw as she too, came toward him. Twitching his tail tip, he glanced around. The sun was climbing higher and higher into the sky with each heartbeat. "Hey, uh... you know how Jaggedstripe and Badgerstep became mates? W-well, I saw them the other day... and, well..." Stormpaw trailed off. He didn't know exactly how to say what he wanted to say.
"I mean, do you think that... they're happier than us?" Stormpaw blurted out, his mind reeling. He had always seen the couple being together, looking happier and more content than Stormpaw and Hornetpaw. It even made him somewhat jealous.

Hornetpaw's amber eyes flashed with concern, and she put her tail on the other apprentice's shoulder as he came toward her. She had seen Stormpaw coughing, and she was worried as she thought it might not've been a good idea to let him out of camp.
"Yes?" She prompted, black fur on her neck rising from curiousity. Then she shook her head in confusion as he finished his sentence. "What do you mean? Of course they aren't. We're perfectly fine how we are," She snorted, not understanding what the tom meant.
Looking back at him, she wondered if he was okay. Her eyes shadowed with slight concern, then she shook it off. Of course he was fine. Why wouldn't he be? Then she thought back to what Stormpaw had said. She imagined Badgerstep and Jaggedstripe, walking through the marshy territory in their place. Hornetpaw shook it off, annoyed. "I'm not really jealous, am I?" She thought out loud, looking at her friend and laughing. "..... And I just said that out loud."

Somehow, Stormpaw couldn't manage to believe Hornetpaw. Sure they were closer than they were before, which was great, but he resist feeling that Jaggedstripe and Badgerstep's bond was stronger than his and Hornetpaw's. He didn't know why he was jealous of them. Maybe it was because they seemed so casual with each other, when Stormpaw on the other hand, was too shy to start doing things like nuzzling Hornetpaw's cheek, or licking her ear. He knew that she-cats liked that sort of comfort, but to him, it felt so strange and foreign.
When Hornetpaw murmured something out loud, it surprised him and he looked up from his paws and at her, dumbfounded. So Hornetpaw was jealous too? Frowning, he scuffled his paws in the dirt, embarrassed to reveal that he felt the same way. "Er, I do too..." he confessed. "It's just that, they look happier than we are... and, well..." he started, but then trailed off. Stormpaw wasn't even sure what he wanted to say. In truth, he couldn't describe why he envied other couples in the Clan, he just did.

Realization dawned on Hornetpaw as she listened to Stormpaw speak. "Just because they're mates and we're no doesn't mean they're happier than us," she mewed idignantly, puffing her fur up. She shook her fur, giving her chest a quick lick to calm her pelt down.
"Let's just keep walking, alright?" the apprentice said quietly, making her feet move. She was tired, she realized as she walked slowly along. The she-cat hadn't slept well in 4 nights because she had been worrying about Stormpaw. She yawned, then clamped her jaws shut, wanting to enjoy spending time with her friend and not complaining about being sleepy.

Stormpaw was startled by the fierceness in Hornetpaw's voice, but he knew it was probably because he was annoying her with his mouse-brained complaints. But he knew she was right, either way. He was happier than he'd ever been, now that he confessed his feelings for Hornetpaw.
Stormpaw decided to stop talking and simply enjoy Hornetpaw's company. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed her yawn, then stop adrubtly. Pressing up against her flank, he looked at her with a concerned gleam in his sharp blue eyes. "Hey, you don't have to stay out here with me if you're tired," he murmured, pressing his nose into her shoulder comfortingly.
"We can go back to camp and rest," he offered, coming to a halt as if they were going to turn around then and there. Stormpaw realized that she must've been tired after worrying over him during the time that he was unconcsious, and he felt a pang of sympathy.

Hornetpaw I'M A LADY AND LADIES SHOULDN'T BE MESSED WITH "I'm fine, Stormpaw. Just a little ti-tir-" The black apprentice's body shook as a yawn rattled her frame. She shook her head, clamping her jaws closed as she walked. "Tired." She smiled at her friend, her shoulder tingling as he pressed his nose into it. Licking his ear affectionally, she purred slightly. Flicking her tail, she pulled her head away from Stormpaw as a yawn shook her again.
Hornetpaw shook her head, letting out a mrrow of amusement at the thought of going back to rest. "I spent four days worrying about you. And doing nothing but that. Getting a walk and knowing you're okay is good enough. Really," The she-cat meowed, eyes shining as she looked into Stormpaw's blue ones. She nudged him with her pink nose, trying to get him to start walking again.
Whiskers twitching, she looked up at the sky. It was a while before sunhigh, but far after dawn. Small white clouds scuttled across the sky, then dissappearing into the horizon. A little ways off, she could hear a bird singing. "Do you ever wonder why birds chirp?" Hornetpaw mewed absentmindedly, a curious tone in her voice. It was a question she asked herself often, for what reason, she had no clue.

Stormpaw rolled his eyes and still wasn't convinced. But he knew better than to start an arguement, so he simply shut-up and continued to walk along beside her, purring as she licked his ears affectionately.
When she asked why birds chirped, he grinned. He knew that Hornetpaw would ask questions like that. "No. Do you ever wonder why cats meow?" he snorted, amusement sparkling in his blue eyes as he turned to look at Hornetpaw, as if saying he was only teasing her.
Stormpaw wasn't that "deep" with nature, as some would call it, but Hornetpaw definetely was. She seemed so curious about everything, it was no wonder she asked strange questions. But Stormpaw was completely fine with that. It was one of the things he loved about her.

Hornetpaw I'M A LADY AND LADIES SHOULDN'T BE MESSED WITH Hornetpaw rolled her honey-colored eyes, while them theirselves were shining with amusement. "Yes. Yes have. And I know the answer," The black cat teased, wondering if he would ask what it is. She stuck her tongue out at Stormpaw in a very un-ladylike manner and shot off, her large paws hitting the soft ground with a dull thud.
"Catch me if you can!" The apprentice yowled over her shoulder, laughing. She felt the breeze ruffle trhough her pelt, and she grinned. It felt good in her black fur, and her eyes twinkled with amusement. She looked behind herself, wondering if Stormpaw was following. Not seeing him, she scrambled up a tree, which was standing by itself, hoping he wouldn't find her. It was scrawny, but she hoped it would hide her well enough.

Stormpaw raised a brow in a questioning expression and snorted. "You do not," he retorted, humor sparkling in his blue eyes. They no longer were dull from his sickness, and were now shining brightly again. When Hornetpaw suddenly shot off, he worried for a heartbeat if he was well enough to chase her.
But then he shook his head. He was giving Hornetpaw more time to hide if he was standing here thinking about his health. Bunching his muscles, Stormpaw dashed off after her. He pelted across the marshy land with a wild gleam of excitement in his eyes. It felt so good to run again, that he almost didn't notice where he was going and tripped, but he avoided it at the last moment.
He lost sight of Hornetpaw and crashed into a clearing with a few small trees. Narrowing his eyes he grinned. He knew that Hornetpaw was hiding; her scent was fresh. He stuck to the undergrowth so she wouldn't be able to see him. He came across a tree that had Hornetpaw's scent, and he chuckled softly. Climbing it, he thought he spotted her black fur among the leaves. "Gotcha!" he yowled loudly when he leapt onto the same branch as her.

Hornetpaw I'M A LADY AND LADIES SHOULDN'T BE MESSED WITH The black cat slowed her breathing, making it almost inaudible. She heard a leaf rustle on the forest floor and knew Stormpaw was close; she could smell his familiar scent, too. Holding her breath, she heard a rumbling voice next to her. Looking up- she was crouching- her eyes widened in surprise as she glanced into his blue eyes.
Jumping up when she saw Stormpaw, she slipped off the branch. Hornetpaw had been trying to regain her balance when she hit the ground, and landed strangely on her back leg. She let out a small yelp as pain burst through her paw, but she stopped short. The apprentice, with a determined gleam in her eyes, jumped back into the tree. "Thanks for startling me!" She meowed, letting out a mrrow of laughter.
The she-cat nudged his shoulder, smiling happily. Her paw still hurt, but she ignored it. "That was fun. So what do you want to do now?" As a after thought, she added, "For the record, I do know why cats meow. They meow because they have to talk. But I still don't get why birds chirp."

Stormpaw grinned when Hornetpaw jumped, and was about to playfully swipe his paw at her ear, until she fell. He gasped, eyes widened in fear and worry, but he relaxed as she got up and climbed into the tree again. Though his heart was still beating quite quickly, and he let out a breath of relief. "Sorry about that," he mumbled in embarrassment, licking Hornetpaw's shouler when she nudged him.
Stormpaw noticed Hornetpaw wince at her paw, but he knew that if he asked her about it she would simply tell him that she was alright. Besides, he knew that a little scrape would be nothing to Hornetpaw. Frowning at Hornetpaw, he snorted and battered her ear with his sheathed paw. "Seriously? That's your answer?" he sniffed, rolling his eyes. "Maybe the birds chirp so that they could talk," he teased, his blue eyes glowing with amusement and humor.

Hornetpaw I'M A LADY AND LADIES SHOULDN'T BE MESSED WITH Hornetpaw blushed slightly, though you couldn't see it, when Stormpaw licked her shoulder. "It's fine," She purred, forgetting the pain in her leg for a moment. Watching him bat her ear out of the corner of her vison, she smiled and listened to him speak. "Yes, that seriously is my answer," The black apprentice said defiantly, staring at the other cat with a piercing honey colored gaze.
Then she chuckled with laughter, using her claws to stay steady on the scrawny branch of the tree. She regained her serious composure, though the amusement twinkling in her eyes remained. "When a bird chirps, what do you hear? You don't hear words, do you?" The she-cat challenged Stormpaw, raising an eyebrow as she looked into his blue eyes, glancing at the gray around the edge.
As if on cue, a vibrantly colored robin landed on the branch right in front of them, and tilted it's head curiously. It let out a large sqwack, then took off into the air, it's wings gliding through the sky gracefully. "Hmph. I stand corrected, because that bird certainly acted like it was talking."

Stormpaw rolled his eyes at Hornetpaw's remarks. He didn't often listen to birds as they sang, since he was busy with apprentice jobs, but he had heard them enough to get a general idea on them. "Maybe it has its own language, and maybe dogs do too, or fish, even," he argued, frowning with a suddenly serious expression as if he were in an important debate.
Though Stormpaw realized how funny he must've looked, and he grinned in embarrassment and amusement. "But, maybe you are right. Maybe birds just squawk for the fun of it," he teased, flicking Hornetpaw's chin with his bushy tail-tip. He thought about how birds chirped again, and wondered if they really did have their own language. Everything happens for a reason, doesn't it? Why would birds be given the ability to chirp if their sounds were meaningless? Surely they must have some way of communication.
