Fang swiveled one ear toward what seemed like the sound of plants crumpling and the thud of something heavy land on the ground. He briefly glanced over his shoulder and saw that Muse had tripped. Barely, a tiny smile of amusement formed on his face, butin a heartbeat it was gone. No. I can't let myself get close to her, he vowed, trying to shake every thought of Muse out of his mind. If Jake ever found her, and hurt her, it would've left Fang heartbroken. That's why he wasn't going to become close to anyone ever again, and be hurt just like his mother did to him.
At her question, he said nothing for a long time. Padding on the dirt thunderpath, he glanced around at the trees, the long stalks of grass that bordered the thunderpath, and the flowers that bloomed here and there. Where were they going? He didn't really know, exactly. "A place where I could settle down for an amount of time. Maybe a moon, perhaps," he answered briskly, a look of anxiety fleeting across his face for a moment. Don't worry, you'll find somewhere to stay soon. You'll be safe from him soon. His tail swayed back and forth in a peaceful state.
"But... I don't know what happens from there. Where you'll go, I mean," he added after a few thoughtful considerations. A small part of him wanted Muse to stay with him, but he knew that wasn't a very good choice. If she stayed with him, Jake would find her at some point. And like he thought to himself earlier, he wasn't going to risk her well-being, even if they were completely different individuals.

Muse felt hurt. A throbbing kind of pain ate away at her heart, as she stared at Fang ahead of her. She didn't know when she had gotten it in her head that they may actually stay together... but she felt as if he had told her to leave him alone now.
"Oh.." she mummered, then shut her mouth so that she wouldn't reveal the hurt that she felt. Almost unconsciously she began looking at anything but Fang, as if looking at him would make her hurt more.
Taking a deep breath, she scented something more than the strange twoleg plants and her and Fang. She scented something strange on the wind... something she didn't recognize.

Fang almost stopped when he thought he recognized pain in Muse's voice. Maybe she stepped on a pebble, he thought to himself. But if she had, she would've said something like "Ow!" - which she didn't. Was it something she said? Before he could ask her, a familiar scent greeted his nose. Cat-scent, he realized with a jolt. His limbs froze with realization followed by fear, but a heartbeat later, he forced himself to move. "Run!" he hissed, turning back and nudging Muse forwards, breaking into a sprint.
Fang could almost feel Jake's eyes burning into his back as he fled. "You can run, but you can't hide!" Jake called out to him. The black tom didn't dare look over his shoulder; memories of his nightmare flooding into his mind. He burst through the field and onto a new thunderpath, almost getting ran over by a monster. Though, he was too terrorfied to notice when the giant twoleg contraption adrubtly stopped, making a loud, screeching noise.
Pushing onwards, Fang thrust himself through a gap underneath a twoleg fence, and continued on, turning at every nick and crannie that came into his vision. He never looked back once to see if Muse was following. When he reached a corner, by a few trash cans, he realized that Muse wasn't with him. All thoughts of Jake vanished and his mind began to race. "Muse!" he yowled, turning and pelting back the way he had taken to reach the trash cans, desperately trying to remember which way he took.
But no matter where he looked, he simply could not find Muse anywhere. He slumped to the ground, and stared at the hard surface, claws struggling to sink into it. Where was Muse? "Muse!" he called again, hoping that her voice would sound. But it didn't. Oh, no... this is my fault. Jake will find her, and... and... Fang forced himself to rise to his paws again and attempt to search for the tabby once more, trying to keep his voice from cracking from fear and anxiety.

A shocked look overcame Muse's face as Fang hissed at her to run, and sprinted off. Oddly enough she didn't take off running immediately, she scented the air once agian. The musky odor was strong now, but she could tell that is was another cat. With a twinge of hesitation, Muse bounded off, following Fang. She skidded to a halt at the thunderpath and closed her eyes tight as the monster almost hit Fang. Opening them again, and feeling hollow with pain she looked across the thunderpath for his slain body. When she didn't seem him, a tiny flicker of hope began to blossom in her chest. She scarmbled up to the thunderpath, and stood at it's side. From there she could just see Fang's form as he raced towards twoleg place. Impaitently, she waited for the monster to move so that she could pass unharmed. At last the monster roared off, and Muse looked hesitantly before crossing the thunderpath, once it was quiet for a few heartbeats she dashed across. On the other side, she paused to scent the air, picking up Fang's scent she bounded off following it. She came to a two-leg fence, and could see a few tufts of Fang's hair that had gotten caught as he scrambled under ir. Slick as a snake she slithered under it, and stared around in wonder. This end of twoleg place wasn't and end that she was familair with. Wairly, her fur fluffed up she scented the air and hissed loudly when she recognized the musky odor from the field. Whipping around she saw a strange brown tabby with amber eyes, and he was big... very big. Fluffing her fur up she backed away quickly, her hackles raised and claws unsheathed. "Stay away from me, fleabag."Feeling something solid against she back, she realized she had backed up against a two-leg building, realizing that she was potentially cornered, her heart sped up pounding in her small chest. ________________________________________ words:333

Fang didn't realize that he was only a couple of twoleg nests away from where Jake had cornered Muse. The tabby tom smiled innocently, advancing toward the cowering she-cat. He raised a brow in a questioning expressions and sat down a few mouse-lengths away from Muse, facing her with a sly expression. "Fleabag? I'm sorry, Miss, but I think you have me mixed up with someone else," he meowed, his voice deep and rich like honey. "My name is Chester." His amber eyes flashed with hatred for a heartbeat, but no one would've been able to notice. As he went on, his voice turned into a worried tone. "I'm sorry for frightening you, but I couldn't help but notice the cat you were with."
Jake laughed in his head; he couldn't believe that this stupid she-cat was buying it. Once he got her to think that Fang was the bad cat, she would refuse to travel with him, leaving her vulnurable out in the open. His scheme formed rapidly in his mind, and he almost smiled, but he held his anxious face. When Muse didn't respond to his faulty words, his eyes widened and his jaw dropped. "Don't tell me you don't know who he is?" he gasped, glancing around as if making sure no one heard.
"That tom is a murderer! I heard that he killed an old she-cat!" he whispered urgently, tail lashing nervously. His words became sharp when he finished his sentence. He was clearly metioning his own mother. When he sees his precious little mate has turned against him, it will give me the chance to kill him. Jake frowned, as if trying to keep himself from shaking in fear. "You shouldn't be with him; he'll hurt you!" Jake pleaded desperately, putting on quite the act.

The news that this tom, Jake, spoke so nonchalantly to her. Accusing Fang to be a murderer! Muse felt appalled that this tom would even suggest that Fang would do such a thing. Her eyes widened in shock, she hissed at Jake, "How dare you?!" Her fur bristling, she stalked towards the larger tom, spitting, "How dare you march in here and tell me all of these horrible lies about Fang! Fang is a good cat! He doesn't run around killing people and spreading rumors like you!" By the time Muse had finished going off on Jake she was nose to nose with him. The grey tabby didn't know who Jake was or where he came from, but she knew one thing. He wasn't welcome in her life or Fangs. She was shocked to see that her claws were unsheathed. Muse hadn't fought much in her life, but she could hold her own. She was surprised at the emotions coursing through her, and the pure hatred that she felt towards Jake- and she didn't even know him. He may look at Muse and take her lightly because of her small size, but the little grey tabby was pretty sure she could get some decent blows in, and maybe scar up his face. So that all the other cats would know what a liar he was. Still some doubts ran through her head about Fang. Fang hadn't told her anything about his past, so couldn't what Jake said... be true? After all, Fang was the one running from Jake. Mentally shaking her head, she decided that this was something that Fang would explain... not this stranger. _____________________________________ words:278

Inside, Jake was beginning to get irritated. Why was this she-cat resisting? Was his acting not good enough? No, his acting was perfect. It seemed as if Muse had gotton closer to Fang that he'd expected, so it would take more to change her mind about him. As the smaller, scrawnier tabby shoved her muzzle into his face, he took a few steps back, trying to appear more frightened. "Oh, but Miss! These aren't rumors! I've seen him with my own eyes, I swear!" he insisted, his expression growing more dark.
"Muse?" Fang called, growing closer to them. Jake stiffened at the sound of Fang's voice; he had to leave soon, but he couldn't fail. "He's coming! I need to leave, but please, save yourself!" With one last terrorfied glance, Jake turned and shot off around a corner, tail between his hind legs. I've got them both just where I want them! he thought menacingly. Just as the muscular tabby disappeared, Fang appeared from a few fox-lengths away, glancing around anxiously. When his worried gaze rested on Muse, his face lit up and he bounded toward her. "Muse! Are you alright?" he asked as he ran up to her, his eyes narrowed in concern. Normally he wouldn't have shown himself to be this happy and relieved; and he himself was confused as to why he was so worried over the pretty tabby she-cat.
When he realized how pathetic he must've looked, he looked away for a moment out of embarrassment before calming down and letting his fur lie flat. "Er, I mean, sorry for running off. That cat..." he trailed off, expression darkening. He glanced down at his chest, where three long scars were shown, and he almost pulled his lips back in a snarl before forcing himself to relax. "It was nothing. I thought they were somebody else," he meowed flatly, trying to hide the bitterness in his voice. He gave his chest a few slow licks, memories of amber eyes filled with hatred as his tongue passed over the bare skin of each scar.

The little tabby took half a step back, as Jake dashed away as Fang's voice sounded close. Looking up, she saw Fang at the corner of the two-leg building. He looked so worried, and she felt her fur flatten, and her green eyes soften. She found herself so relieved to see that he was okay, even though she also felt a flicker of fear at seeing him. What if Jake had been right? What if Fang was a murderer? What if Jake was only trying to warn her? Shaking off the dark thoughts, Muse bounded towards Fang purring- ignoring how he tried to act cool. Rushing up to him, she touched his muzzle with hers gently, "Fang... I was so worried about you. I thought that monster had gotten you! Then this mange-pelt cat called Chester tried to tell me these lies about you, Fang he said you were a muderer.. but I know that's not true. You'd never hurt anyone."Pulling away from the tom she looked up at him, and stopped speaking. She wished she could stay like this forever, safe and with Fang. words:185

Fang felt his ears grow warm as Muse's muzzle brushed his, and he flushed a bit in embarrassment. She had been worried for him? No one had ever been worried over him. He was just another rogue. Her next words made him freeze, his blood turning to ice. Chester? He didn't know anyone named Chester. But whoever he was, he might know Jake. Or worse; Chester might've been Jake.
He didn't know what to say. Should he tell her the truth? Should he lie? As he stared down at her, noticing the warm look in her eyes, he decided not to tell her about Jake; at least, not yet. He didn't want to ruin the bond he had with her, and shatter her trust. I'll tell her when we find some place to settle down in, he told himself. Swallowing hard, he took a few moments to keep his voice level as he spoke. "That's strange, er, let's get moving again," he meowed, his voice having somewhat of an edge to it. Turning, Fang began to pad off in a random direction, mind reeling.
How had Jake known about him and Muse? What did he do to her? His fur was barely bristling and his ears were pricked for any unnatural sounds. What has Jake been telling Muse? Lies about him, like she mentioned? Surely she didn't believe him; since she was acting normal. The fact that she trusted him made him feel guilty for not telling her the truth about Jake and his past. It's better this way. She won't be hurt, he reminded himself, slowing his pace a bit so Muse could catch up.

With a light purr Muse, followed Fang catching up to him easily. She noticed the intense look on his face, and wondered again if there had been any truth to Chester's words. Shaking away the dark thoughts, she took a deep breath sniffing the air. She could still scent the tom Chester. N'arrowing her eyes slightly at the smell, she turned to mew to Fang. "How are your paws? They must be sore from racing across the thunderpath? " She remembered a strange cat passing through talking about this plant called burdock root. The she-cat had shown her the plant and explained that it was good for sore paws along with rate bites. Looking around she didn't immediately smell any burdock root, but she figured she may find some as they traveled. She assumed that Fang would say that his paws were okay, and she was prepared for his lie. She didn't realize how much she had come to trust Fang in one day until she saw him almost killed on the thunderpath. After her confrontation with Chester, her pelt was still bristling, and she was slowly getting it to lie down. The pretty grey tabby delicately stepped as she walked beside Fang. Looking down she could see her white paws were dirty with Thunderpath grit and the two-leg field dirt. Crraving a break to wash her paws, she prayed that Fang would want to take a break as soon as they were far away from the wierd cat Chester, because Muse oddly didn't trust the mangey tom. In her head she could still see him as he plantively tried to tell her that Fang was a murderer. Finding herself staring at her companion she attempted to push the dark thoughts out of her mind. What if Chester was right? What if Fang was really a murderer? What if Fang was planning to murder her? As if she was having a mental argument, she could feel another part of her arguing for Fang. words:339

Fang was still tense when he heard Muse ask about his paws. Looking down at them for the first time since he fled from Jake, he noticed they were dirty and they were sore. But of course, he would never admit his weaknesses, not even to Muse. He was capable of enduring unimportant injuries like sore paws or aching muscles. Without turning to look at the pretty gray tabby, he meowed flatly, "They're fine." In the back of his mind, Fang appreciated the fact that Muse cared for him enough to ask how he felt, even if it were small things like asking if his paws were sore.
After walking around for a long time, Fang was beginning to get a bit tired. His paws had gotton more worn out, and each step was painful. He considered stopping to rest for the night, and he turned to announce it to Muse, when he saw her staring at him. His unusually bright yellow eyes gleamed from the dim light, shining from concern. "Are you alright?" he asked warily, feeling both concerned and uncertain. Then it dawned on him.
What if Muse believed what Jake had told her - if that stranger was even Jake at all? There was no doubt that he must've told lies about Fang, but he had never expected Muse to believe them. But maybe he expected too much from her. They had met barely more than a day ago, and yet Fang already felt some kind of bond with her. Could what the amber-eyed tabby said really have made Muse so uncertain about him - or something else?

Muse didn't belive Fang's denials. She had an intention of finding burdockroot as soon as they stopped to rest. As she contiuned to pad beside him, she felt that two-leg place just flew past her. She didn't really look around and he tummel of thoughts were broken when Fang asked if she was okay.
"I-I'm fine." she stammered. She wasn't sure how he noticed her deep thoughts, and made an excutive decision to start a conversation. "So... What's your favorite source of prey?" she asked suddenly, and felt her face flush. She wasn't sure what started this question, but she just knew that she couldn't be alone with her thoughts.

Fang raised a brow in a questioning expression, but didn't press Muse any furthur. It didn't seem like she was fine like she told him, and a part of him felt disappointed that she lied to him - if she even did. But he felt like she did. So what? She won't always be honest with you, he told himself mentally. Then a wave of guilt flooded over him. IS that what Muse felt? Disappointment that he wouldn't tell her the truth?
Relieved that she changed the subject, Fang cleared his throat before answering. He didn't mind if the question was random. "Uh... usually the dumpster," he admit bluntly. "What about you?" he countered, turning his face so he could look ahead of them. They had passed a couple of twoleg nests, and a pond could be visible from ahead. A couple of willow trees loomed over the pond's edge, and he figured they'd be able to rest there for the night.
Pointing toward the pond with his tail, Fang slowed his pace so he was walking behind Muse. "We'll be resting there for the night," he told her, his sore paws reminding him of how tired her was. When they got to the pond, he would build a nest this time. Muse was probably more exhausted than he was, after all.

Muse purred with amusement at Fang's reply, "I prefer freshkill." She had learned to hunt as a young kitten and wondered how Fang was able to hunt to well, if he ate of a dumpster mostly. When her companion annouced where they would be sleeping. She looked at him seriously and meowed, "Alright, I'll hunt and find you some herbs for your paws. You go rest, and don't argue with me."
This time the little tabby ment buisness, and wasn't taking no for an answer. Padding towards the pond, she waited for Fang to find somewhere to rest. He needed to be off his paws, before he walked them into nubs. Sniffing the air, she could scent a strong prey scent. She could also scent her favorite, water vole.
(sorry, I lack in muse)

Fang snorted and rolled his eyes, not bothering to look away so he could hide the grin of amusement on his face. Normally he wouldn't show so much emotion towards any other cat, but Muse was the only exception. He felt like she had the right to know him more, and being more open with her seemed like a good way to start. When they reached the pond, Fang was about to set out on a hunt, but Muse beat him to it.
The black and white tom stared down at the smaller gray tabby, and for once, something shown in his yellow eyes. Knowing Muse, he knew he didn't stand a chance if he'd argued with her about it, so he simply sighed and stood there. After a few moments, he leaned down and pressed his nose into her cheek. "Thanks," he murmured, before turning and padding toward a clump of tall grass. He began to tear the stalks out of the ground and weave them together, attempting to build a make-shift nest.
As he tried to form one big enough for the two of them, Fang couldn't manage to push Muse out of his mind. It was so thoughtful of her to hunt for him, and let him rest after looking after her for the whole time. He hadn't expected something so big like that from her. Even if it was actually just a small favor, it meant a lot to someone who hadn't felt cared for for a very long time. For a heartbeat, he wondered if Muse was still there. Her scent was still on his pelt, but he didn't mind. It smelled familiar, and comforting.
