Her father was trying to convince her that none of this was her fault? No, he was wrong. It was her fault. She had been born, and if she hadn't been then maybe her parents wouldn't argue. Mintkit wouldn't have to deal with her and her mother didn't have a kit to hate. Everything would be better without her.
Looking up at him, her eyes were full of sadness. Squirrelkit felt comforted by his warm tongue, and the horrible thoughts seemed to wash away. At least she had daddy to take care of her. But how could she, didn't kits need their mother? Blinking at his question she shrugged. She didn't know what he was suppose to do. He was the bigger cat, wasn't he suppose to make the decisions?
Seeing Huskykit she purred a little, but then Huskykit started talking about her parents. And then asking her own father if he was going to jump into the gorge. What did she mean by that? What was a gorge? And why did daddy leave her?
Feeling scared she shivered and pressed her body to the ground. "Daddy?"
she whispered, her voice strained from lack of use and her lungs not used to doing anything but breathe. This was extra. Okay, no more, it hurt too much.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Sharptalon pricked her ears and thought he heard a whisper sound from Squirrelkit, who was shivering underneath him. Understanding suddenly dawned on him and he realized that Squirrelkit overheard his conversation with Huskykit. He flashed the older kit an annoyed look then glanced down at his daughter. "I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart." he promised, painfully aware of Squirrelkit's fear-scent. Sharptalon was already trying to act as both Squirrelkit's mother and father, btu he knew that he could never play the role that was meant for Morningblossom. Not to mention the fact that his own daughter thought that hewas going to jump off the gorge.

She really hoped her father's words were true. She couldn't stand if he went somewhere. She would be left all alone with a mother who didn't want her. She didn't mean for her fear-scent to be so strong, but the thoughts running through her head wouldn't stop. Squirrelkit began to cough again, becoming too worried and panicking again. Whimpering she tried to stop it, but the thought of daddy being gone was overpowering her. Her entire body was shaking now, and though Sharptalon was trying to calm her down, it wasn't working.
Squirrelkit was able to stop her coughing, but the shaking couldn't be helped. Mewling with fright, she buried herself further underneath Sharptalon, if that was possible.

Sharptalon felt his chest tighten when Squirrelkit erupted into a bout of coughing, and widened his eyes in fear. "Aspenfrost!" he cried, crouching down and desperately rasping his tongue across Squirrelkit's frail body in an attempt to calm her down. Aspenfrost heard Sharptalon and for a heartbeat disappeared into the medicine den, but then returned with a chunk of honey comb in her jaws. She rushed over to Squirrelkit and motioned for Sharptalon to give her some space. He immediately obeyed, and stood wide-eyed as Aspenfrost gave Squirrelkit some honey. "Here, eat this," she instructed, holding the comb above the little kit's mouth so she could lick up the honey.

"Huskykit! Huskykit, where are you?!" Frozensnow came inside the apprentice, looking for her kit. Dunekit followed her, a wide curling grin planted on his face. Huskykit crouched down as Squirrelkit began to cough, knowing she scared her friend, and she was in no mood to see her mother. "Hi momma." she meowed weakly, blinking. Frozensnow wondered what was going on, and turned to Sharptalon. "What is going on here?" she asked with a worried look at Squirrelkit. Dunekit saw the smaller kit and grinned. "She looks like she was hacking out butterflies!" ((lol Dunekit!))

Sharptalon swung his head around to glare at Frozensnow. "What does it look like?!" he hissed, prepared to defy anyone who says anything about Squirrelkit's sickness. Without another word, he turned to Aspenfrost once more with an anxious expression on his face. He knew his daughter was a fighter, but he couldn't help but feel apprehension prickle through his fur as her coughing fit rang out through the clearing.

Frozensnow almost didn't hear Sharptalon's remark because she turned to Dunekit next to her. "Dunekit! That is clearly unreaseble to say!" she scolded, narrowing her frosty-green eyes. Dunekit just boldly shugged. "Well she is sick all the time, so I-" he was cut off as Huskykit knock her smaller brother to the ground, standing over him. "Watch your mouth Dunekit, Squirrely is my friend! Her partents just broke up so shut up!" "What?!" Frozensnow gasped, turning to Sharptalon. "Sharptalon, I-I-I..." her voice trailed off, not knowing what to say at these shocking news.

Squirrelkit didn't like this at all. Why couldn't she be normal like her friend? Her eyes pleaded with her father as she finally heard him call Aspenfrost over. She looked at the honey-comb that the medicine cat had and stared at it for a few moments. She was suppose to lick it? Remembering that she had done this before, the tiny kit took a tentative taste before having several licks, it tasted sweet and good! Her coughing stopped after a while, but it had tired out her little body. This whole day had been exhausting for her.
When she saw Dunekit her eyes narrowed. That wasn't very nice. She was glad Huskykit defended her and managed a small smile as she saw Dunekit's expression. And then her friend just had to mention her parents again.
Mewling a little she looked to Sharptalon. She was feeling cold and didn't know what to think or do. She was so tired, but knew she wouldn't be able to sleep. Her body soon gave out on her, and she fell to the ground. She had pushed herself a little too hard today. Curling her tail around her body she just lay there watching the events occur.

"What? What's so shocking about that? Not like you care, anyways. But you do'nt have to look like I just murdered someone!" he snarled, his eyes narrowed into an angry glare.
Whisking around, he leaned down to grab Squirrelkit's scruff in his jaws and stalked off toward the medicine cat den, where he knew he could get some peace and quite. Aspenfrost followed him in silence, and said nothing when he settled his kit down into a warm nest. "Hey, how would you like to learn about the herbs I have?" Aspenfrost suggested quietly, gazing down at Squirrelkit with warm and gentle eyes.

Oh no! Daddy looked really mad now. What had she done now? Curling herself into a ball, she just wished everything could be alright. Why did her life have to be so awful. Shivering she didn't realize she was whimpering until now. Stopping herself, the little kit buried her face, not wanting to see her daddy angry. Yes, she had seen her mother angry, and had even felt her anger before. But Daddy was her idol, and now he was acting like mommy. Was it opposite day?
For what seemed like the hundredth time today, she was picked up once again and like usual, she went limp. Squirrelkit was glad she was picked up, she was unsure if her paws would hold her up anymore. She was just so tired. And then, there was a warm nest. The tiny kit purred as she snuggled deep into the warmth. It felt so good, and all her troubles were almost forgotten.
Looking up at the medicine cat the sleepy kit blinked. Squirrelkit had been in this den so much during her short life, and had not really cared before. Why not, she was bored and didn't want to sleep. She nodded and got onto her paws, ready to explore.

Aspenfrost smiled and in return Sharptalon sighed. He was half-hoping that Squirrelkit would rest for a bit, he didn't want her to collapse. But it seemed as though his small daughter was lively and on her paws again, and he couldn't help but chuckle quietly. "Alright, follow me," she purred in amusement, gesturing with her tail for the ginger kit to follow her. When Aspenfrost reached the farthest point of her den, she pointed to her herb stock with her nose. "Here is where I keep all my medicine," she explained, "The same ones I use for you, and every one else in RiverClan. It's my job to make sure they're healthy and happy." Aspenfrost say down and curled her tail neatly around her paws.

Squirrelkit looked to her father, slightly seeking his approval, but mostly just making sure he was okay. When Aspenfrost left to go to the back of the den, the little kit followed. Her eyes were wide with curiosity.
When they reached the herb store she stared at it, her eyes widening even more. That was a lot of herbs! The sad thing was the little kit recognized many of them. Most, if not all, had been used on some sickness she had had. Padding closer, her eyes caught sight of something used on her many times. Squirrelkit knew it probably the best out of them all. Her tail pointed to the few berries that were just out of her reach. The juniper berries had been used to help her when she couldn't stop coughing...which occurred more often than she would like. Grinning at Aspenfrost she knew exactly what that was. Pointing to the berries then to herself she tried to explain to the medicine cat that they had been used on her many times.

Sharptalon nodded slightly and winked at Squirrelkit, before watching her and Aspenfrost leave to explore the depths of the medicine den. Aspenfrost purred as Squirrelkit's eyes brightened, and gave out a mrrow of laughter as the tiny kit tried desperately to tell her that she knew what juniper berries were. "I see you've found my juniper berries," she smiled, surprised that such a young kit knew her herbs. "I think you already know that these berries are used to help your coughing." she winked, gesturing to the purple berries with her fluffy tail.
Though, more than Aspenfrost's surprise, there was actually hope prickling through her short fur. She gazed at Squirrelkit with thoughtful aspen-colored eyes, thoughts flowing in and out of her head. After what seemed like moons, the gentle medicine cat finally spoke, "Squirrelkit, I think you're very bright," Her words were truthful, Aspenfrost realized, and she went on, "How would you like to help me with my medicine cat duties?" The question wasn't sudden at all, and Aspenfrost knew that she had actually wanted to ask Squirrelkit for a quarter-moon now. "You could help me sort my herbs, and you could even listen to the elders' stories with me when I go to replace their bedding every now and then." she described, a warm gleam in her eyes.

All Squirrelkit needed was her daddy's approval and she felt much better. She had a little bit of a bounce as she padded off. The medicine cat was laughing at her? Why? The little kit didn't understand this. She nodded as the medicine cat spoke exactly what she had been thinking. She may be small, but that didn't effect her memory. The smell of them was something she wouldn't ever forget. Hopefully she wouldn't need any of them anytime soon. She wished she could reach some to play with them, but figured that wouldn't go along too well with Aspenfrost.
Aspenfrost seemed deep at thought, so Squirrelkit looked over the stock of herbs as the medicine cat thought. She tried to see how many of them she could remember. When the medicine cat finally spoke she smirked. Well duh she was bright! She was mute, not mousebrained. Wait, someone actually wanted her help with something? Her mother always had told her she was good for nothing. The little kit looked fearful for a moment but nodded. This would give her something to do!
Squirrelkit was excited! She was wanted! And she could help out and be useful. Maybe this could help her be stronger! And then she could be a warrior just like her daddy. After all, this was just a temporary thing. She just had three moons until she was apprenticed. Three moons for her to get stronger, but at least she wouldn't be a burden to the clan.

Aspenfrost brightened when she saw the joyful look on Squirrelkit's face and leaned down to give her ear a lick. "It's about time I need someone to help me out around here." she purred, her eyes sparkling in amusement. Casting a glance at her stock of herbs, a hint of worry flashed through her eyes but then vanished. With her garden destroyed, it would take all of green-leaf to grow it back. "How about I teach you some of the herbs' names?" she suggested, pulling out the fist thing she felt. It was burdock root. Clearing her throat, she began, "This root is called burdock root, want to guess what you use it for?" she prompted, raising her brow. She didn't expect Squirrelkit to know this herb, since she hasn't been treated with it.
