Though today had its bumps and bruises, it had also been the best day of her life. Everything that had happened with her mother had led to this moment. Aspenfrost needed her help. Someone needed her. Someone actually wanted her. Feeling the tongue of the she-cat, the tiny kit began to purr. Straightening herself up she puffed out her chest, trying to make herself appear bigger. She would make Aspenfrost proud to have chosen her. Squirrelkit was going to work hard!
Eager to get started, she nodded at the mentioning of learning herbs. Though she knew most of the herbs, she probably didn't know their names. The young kit knew what they looked like and what they were for, but not the names of them. Squirrelkit had come up with her own names for the ones that had been given to her.
Sitting down the little kit's tail was twitching in excitement. Studying the first item Aspenfrost had pulled out she looked at it curiously. This one was new, and she had never seen it before. Burdock root? Okay, she could remember that....maybe. Thinking about it she shook her head. She had no clue what it was for or even a guess. She waited for the medicine cat to tell her what it was for.

Aspenfrost smiled as Squirrelkit quivered in excitement, and gave her another moment to think. Finally, when it seemed as though she didn't know the answer, Aspenfrost spoke up. "Burdock root is for curing rat bites," she explained. "Rats are like mice, but they look a bit different. Their bites are harmful though, and burdock root is a good way to heal them." Aspenfrost placed the burdock root back where she had found it, and let her eyes wander around each different herb. Her gaze rested on a few red berries, and she tensed. Should she show Squirrelkit? The curious kit might accidentally stumble upon them if she didn't, Aspenfrost reflected. Carefully, she prodded the red berries gently with her paw and rolled them in front of herself. "These are called Yarrow," she meowed seriously.
"They're more commonly known as death berries." Aspenfrost didn't want to frighten the kit, but she'd have to tell her sooner or later if she was going to help around the medicine den. "These berries have a very strong poison in them, and can be fatal to even the strongest warrior. You must never, ever eat these, understood?" she meowed, fixing Squirrelkit a hard stare. "Though they can be useful sometimes. When there is an adder threat, we place these berries in front of their den so we can get rid of them, and we also use them to weaken foxes who stumble into our territory." Aspenfrost finished, the sternness that had been in her voice earlier had decreased, but it still lingered.

Squirrelkit nodded. Burdock root was for rat bites. She could remember that, though she didn't know what a rat was. The ginger kit was glad when Aspenfrost explained what a rat was. Maybe when she was bigger and older she could see a rat! That could be exciting. The little kit bounced up and down eager to know what she would learn next. This was like a game, and she liked games.
Aspenfrost brought a new item out and the little kit glanced at it curiously. They looked so pretty and actually looked good to eat. But the thought soon stopped when she was told what they really were. Yarrow would be harder to remember than Deathberries. All this little kit knew is that she was staying far away from them. She nodded, promising not to ever eat them. If it could be fatal to even the strongest warrior, she didn't stand a chance. Shuddering at the thought, Squirrelkit listened to what Aspenfrost said next. So even though the berries were dangerous they could also be helpful. She nodded and took one last look at the Yarrow. She definitely would remember that one.
Her eyes were bright again, wondering what the medicine cat would bring out next.

Aspenfrost could see that Squirrelkit understood, and then nodded briskly before placing the deadly berries back where she had found them. Next she pulled out a few leaves with small pink and blue star-shaped flowers, and layed them out before Squirrelkit. "I think you should know these," she purred. "I'll give you a hint, they're used to bring down fever. You've aten these before a couple of times." Aspenfrost pushed the borage leaves in front of the curious kit and smiled. She was very bright, Aspenfrost reflected, and she would certainly appreciate her help around the medicine den.

Squirrelkit was glad when those awful berries had been put away. Just being near them made her somewhat nervous. The tiny kit watched as Aspenfrost pulled the next herb down. Looking at the leaves being spread out she noticed they looked familiar to her. Now what were they? Aspenfrost mentioned that she knew them, and she knew she did.
The clue helped and she instantly remembered having to eat these many times. She poked the leaves with her paw as they were brought closer and she bounced up and down on her paws. How could she show that she knew what it was? Squirrelkit thought for a minute then stared at the medicine cat. She knew what the herbs did, but not their names. She shook her head, not knowing the answer.

Aspenfrost chuckled as Squirrelkit examined the borage leaves, she looked so intent on figuring it out. When the little kit gave up, she brought the leaves back to her paws. "These are called borage leaves. They're very helpful to nursing queens as it increases their supply of milk. These leaves are also good in lowering fevers." she explained, pawing the small blue and pink flowers delicately. Aspenfrost knew that Squirrelkit would soon bore of listening to her rambling on about herbs, maybe she could try something else. "How about I test you a bit, to see if you remember the herbs I just taught you?" she purred, a twinkle of amusement in her aspen colored eyes. "I'll give you a scenario, and you'll take out the herb that fits it. Alright, let's begin. A warrior has a scratch on their shoulder. What do we do to stop the bleeding?" she prompted. Aspenfrost didn't discuss cobwebs with Squirrelkit, but it was such a basic remedy that everyone knew how and when to use it.

Squirrelkit was a bit disappointed that she couldn't remember the name of the herb, but she was just a kit. She had to keep remembering that. Though the young kit was patient, she was after all, a kit. Her attention span was starting to dwindle as she listened to the herbs bit by by.
When Aspenfrost suggested something new, she instantly brightened up. She nodded, she could do that! All she had to do was take out whatever it was that would be the best for the situation. Squirrelkit was good at that. She had been in the medicine cat's den enough in her short lifetime that she had practically seen every herb and what they are used for.
Sitting up straight the kit thought about the scenario for a moment. To stop bleeding? She knew Aspenfrost hadn't talked about these, but she did remember seeing this before. Walking toward the stock of herbs and supplies she looked around until she found what she was looking for. Her tail pointed upward, to the sticky cobwebs. That one was easy!

Aspenfrost watched intently as Squirrelkit thought the scenario over in her mind, and when she finally pointed to some cobwebs with her tail, she purred in delight. "Excellent," she praised, her eyes warm. "Now, a nursing queen's milk supply is low, what do we use to increase it?" she inquiried. Aspenfrost and Squirrelkit had just discussed borage leaves, so naturally she'd know the answer in a heartbeat.

Squirrelkit was excited now. She was being praised for doing something right! Nothing she had ever done before was right. A tiny squeak of joy escaped from her mouth, but it quickly stopped when the game continued.
Ooh, she knew this one! Aspenfrost had just talked about it. Scanning the herbs she looked for the ones she remembered were pretty looking. Spotting the borage, her eyes lit up and she pointed once again with her tail to the leaves. She liked this game, it was fun!
Squirrelkit hoped she had gotten this one right, it was making her so happy to have things looking up for her.

Aspenfrost purred in delight once more and grinned. "Correct! You know, for such a tiny kit you're very inteligent," she mewed fondly. Her words were true, Aspenfrost recalled, and she even began to think what it would be like to have Squirrelkit as her apprentice. It would be very convenient, but she would have to grow stronger before it was taken into consideration. Besides, what if she wants to be a warrior? she pointed out to herself, pushing the thought away. Aspenfrost would have to speak to Sharptalon about it later. "Say, I've got just the treat for you.." she suddenly announced, turning toward her herb stock and shuffling through them until she found a few small, blue berries. "These are blueberries, they're sweet and tasty!" she purred, pushing the small berries toward Squirrelkit. The little kit deserved a reward for everything she had done that day, and Aspenfrost was more than glad to be the one to give it to her.

Squirrelkit was liking this praise thing. She had just been told she was intelligent. But not just intelligent...very intelligent. Her eyes seemed to dance with happiness. But there was only one part of what Aspenfrost had said that had bothered her. She wasn't tiny! Glaring at the medicine cat when she spoke those words she didn't like those words.
As the medicine cat seemed lost in thought, the kit was looking over the stock of herbs. Her eyes wandered and wondered how long it took for medicine cats to learn the names of all these herbs. How did they find all of these herbs? What if a wrong herb was given?
The frail kit stared at the object the medicine cat had given her. Her tiny paw poked at it for a few moments and she learned they were blueberries. This was a treat! Grinning Squirrelkit took a tentative taste and as she realized she like it the grin widened. She ate the berries, her tail swishing back and forth in excitement. This was probably the quickest the kit has ever eaten something.

"Squirrely? You in here?" Huskykit came into the Medicine Cat den, holding Dunekit by one of his big ears with her paw. "Mouse-brain here has something to say to you." she meowed with the look at her smaller brother. Dunekit growled, a funny look on his face. "After I say it, will you let go of my ear?" Huskykit only pressed harder. "Ouch! Okay, okay, I'm sorry for calling you sickly!" the sandy-colored tom cried, trying to get away from his larger sister.

Squirrelkit had just finished the wonderful blueberries and was cleaning the remains off her whiskers with her paw as she heard her friend's voice. Turning around she saw Huskykit dragging Dunekit in and it was quite an amusing sight to see. The little kit couldn't help but smile a little.
She was curious what Huskykit had brought Dunekit in the den for and listened to the older kits. When he apologized the kit nodded, showing that she accepted his apology. Squirrelkit looked toward her friend and gave her a look that was thanking her.

Aspenfrost watched curiously as Huskykit and Dunekit entered the medicine den, and frowned when she saw Dunkit's sister pressing his ear down to the ground with a paw. Huskykit, let go of him, fighting is never the answer. she scolded gently. Though she said nothing more and instead watched in amusement as Dunekit apoligized to Squirrelkit. Aspenfrost didn't know what the kit said, but by the way Huskykit was pinning Dunekit down she knew it wasn't good.

With a smile, Huskykit let go of Dunekit. The sandy-colored tom rubbed his ear, making sure it wasn't bleeding from his sister's claws. "Shh Huskykit, you could have been more gentle!" Dunekit growled playfully with a yellow glare at the bigger kit. "Its not my fault you're such a clown." Huskykit meowed, rolling her eyes. "Its not my fault either that you're so freakishly big!" "Its not my fault that you such big ears! I bet a mouse could sleep in them!" "Your eyes are like a rainbow, they're so different from each other!" "Shut up Dunekit!" "You're so big, you could get stu-Yikes!" Dunekit started, then yelped as Huskykit tackled him to the ground. The large she-kit sat on her brother's chest like nothing bad was happening. "You were saying little brother?" Huskykit meowed with a silly grin at the tom under her. Dunekit glared at her.
